Overview:
America’s oldest conservation and outdoors recreation organization, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), seeks an entrepreneurial leader and enthusiastic advocate for outdoor education, conservation, and leadership training to help define and lead the organization’s vision for an AMC Outdoor Journey. The new Vice President, Outdoor Journey will be the leader in executing an ambitious strategy to provide lifelong learning, preparedness, fun, skills building, and leadership, fostering inclusive training and educational programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. The VP will work to include active conservation learning and engagement elements in all the Outdoor Journey offerings, and will use and support growth in AMC’s recreational network of facilities, trails, and trusted community.
As a key component of AMC’s 10-year strategic plan spanning 2020 to 2030, the Outdoor Journey is one of three strategic vision themes that will be integrated throughout the organization’s destinations and volunteer communities through programs and activities. The Vice President will immediately take the lead in launching the Outdoor Journey’s learning and leadership areas as part of the AMC150 Strategic plan in 2020.
The new VP will be an officer of the 501c(3) corporation and a member of the President’s Leadership Team. You will be charged with carrying out AMC objectives with the mission, vision, and core values of the entire organization in mind.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Partner with AMC’s President and Vice Presidents (the “Leadership Team” or “LT”) to ensure organizational goals are met
- Hone and implement the vision of AMC’s Outdoor Journey:
- Emphasis on evolving our training, preparedness, and leadership development model
- Establish formal “bridges” between programs, offering seamless advancement opportunities
- Integrate Guided Outdoors Programs with Destinations programming staff for one cohesive platform of destinations-based offerings
- Create a credentialing ladder for the envisioned AMC Outdoor Leadership Institute (OLI), and an OLI Educators’ track
- Strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion across all programs, including staff hiring
- Launch AMC’s Outdoors Together, incorporating AMC’s Outdoors Rx program, and partnering initially with AMC’s Boston Chapter to develop a model chapter family onboarding program
- Tap into the experience, enthusiasm, and collective intelligence of AMC’s Volunteers
- Connect and incorporate Active Conservation throughout the Outdoor Journey
- Create Outdoor Journey brand identity in conjunction with AMC’s Communications & Marketing team
- Create one consolidated OLI that cohesively brings together training and curriculum across the region
- Develop longer term objectives such as building an AMC Outdoor Corps in association with utilizing Americorps program participants

- Ability to quickly move from strategy to implementation and deliver programmatic results; having a demonstrated ability to take a hands-on approach and work as a agent of positive change
- Excellence in organizational and project management in achieving strategic objectives
- Effective development and management of departmental budgets, balancing and growing sources of support in collaboration with others
- Proven track record of success in developing and managing productive partner relationships
- Awareness, understanding, and appreciation of what it takes to build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team
- Ability to handle a variety of constituencies and thrive in a complex environment with multiple priorities and make challenging and important decisions
- Commitment to working collaboratively with a team of senior level professionals
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Availability and flexibility to work weekday evenings and weekends as needed, as well as travel to various program venues and partner organizations; additional ability to travel safely in the backcountry in a variety of weather conditions is preferred
- Working knowledge of Salesforce or similar CRM system and its purposes
- Bachelor’s degree, from an accredited college or university, in environmental education/studies, outdoor leadership and recreation, or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree or above, or 8-10 years of experience in developing, leading, and/or managing outdoor/environmental education and/or leadership programming preferred.
