This course will offer an overview of web technology, principles of cartographic design, and an introduction to common Web mapping concepts and methods including the client-server model.  Students will learn to develop interactive Web maps and applications using several industry-standard Web mapping software platforms such as ArcGIS Online, Mapbox Studio, and Carto. Emphasis will be placed upon using and extending existing Web mapping platforms to facilitate rapid development of professional quality Web maps and applications. Basic use of Web markup language (HTML) and stylesheets (CSS and similar formats) will be taught and incorporated in several exercises. Students will also learn to create thematic maps using the JavaScript mapping library Leaflet. The course covers Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web mapping standards and GeoJSON format.  

Qualifications Candidates should have an MS or PhD in GIS, geography, computer science, engineering, or related field and experience applying interactive web mapping. Candidates with previous teaching experience in interactive web mapping or closely related areas such as GIS are preferred.   Candidates must have a good working knowledge of JavaScript. Applicants with a successful history of teaching online courses in interactive web mapping may also be considered.
