Overview:
These week-long, marine science-themed day camps, which are held during June and July, reach children ages 5 to 16 years old. For more information, please see our attached job posting.
Dates: Both positions are for identical 8 week terms, including the periods June 1 to June 26, 2020, and July 6 to July 31, 2020, Monday thru Friday (no camp the week of June 29 – July 2). The position also requires 3 additional paid days of training; May 27, May 28, and July 2, 2020.
Primary Job Responsibility: The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist in the implementation of Florida Oceanographic’s Summer Camp Programs, including Coastal Discovery Camps for ages five to eleven and Teen Immersion Experiences for ages twelve to sixteen. Camp counselors will assist the Summer Camp Director with camp activities, set-up and break-down, cleaning, lesson implementation, science experiments, animal encounters, crafts, seining, basics of snorkeling, basics of fishing, and field trips. Counselors will work with campers onsite and during offsite field trips. Camp Counselors will aid in making summer camp a safe environment for children, where they can learn about local animals and ecosystem while developing creativity and scientific curiosity. Working closely with Education Department staff, the Camp Counselors will gain valuable hands-on teaching experience including practical applications of curriculum design, group facilitation, and scientific field explorations, while learning how to deal with the unexpected variables that are a part of youth programming.
Requirements: o
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. o
- Preference will go to educators or degree-seeking students (undergraduate or graduate) with a major in education, environmental education, marine sciences, biology, environmental sciences, or a similar field. o
- The ideal candidate would have previous teaching experience (classroom or field) with children ages 5-16. o
- Applicants must possess a valid Florida driver’s license and a good driving record. o
- Applicants must be a competent swimmer and comfortable in the water. Snorkeling and fishing experience preferred. o
- Certification in First Aid and CPR required and water safety preferred. o
- Candidates must pass a criminal background check. o
- Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors in typical Florida weather, including high humidity, heat, sun, wind, rain, and insects.
- Must be able to stand for up to 3 hours, walk, run short distances, and carry up to 40 pounds.
