Updating References for Guidelines for the Preparation and Professional Development of Environmental Educators

Hello, Bora and others!
We have aligned our Foundations of Environmental Education course with these NAAEE Guidelines (partly for accreditation purposes, but also because they are great guidelines!). Besides some of what is already referenced, we have found that students first being introduced to EE benefit from reading chapter 1 of Across the Spectrum (we have them read other chapters throughout the semester). Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature (Young, Haas, & McGown, 2010) and Outdoor Education (Gilbertson, Bates, McLaughlin, & Ewert, 2006) allow interesting comparisons between the approaches of these texts. Best Practices for Field Days (University of Minnesota Extension) offers some practical tips and tricks.

Thanks, Becca. This is exactly what we need! In updating the references for each Guidelines Theme, we want to list some of the "go to" resources that faculty and others use when thinking about preparation and professional development. What do others think are key resources???

I agree with Becca Franzen's recommendations. Some other readings that I use with students are The New Science of Teaching and Learning (Tokuhama-Espinosa, 2010), Condition Critical: Key Principles for Equitable and Inclusive Education (Lawrence-Brown and Sapon-Shevin, 2014), Leadership and Environmental Stewardship (Garst and White, 2012), 101 Tips for Supporting Campers with Autism (Tschetter, 2013), Resident Outdoor Environmental Education (Parry, 2013), and Groups, Troops, Clubs, and Classrooms (Ragsdale and Saylor, 2014). If you need specific chapters or pages, let me know. And since you're looking for ideas, I might as well put my own article on the list too. Might be related to themes 4 and 6. Memories as Useful Outcomes of Residential Outdoor Environmental Education (Liddicoat and Krasny, J Env Ed, Vol 45 (3), 2014). Glad you're updating these Guidelines. I would have never known how useful they could be if I hadn't taken a job with Becca Franzen!
