Hi everyone,
I am in the middle of teaching an environmental education class (face-to-face) and Penn State is mandating that we move our classes online for the next 3 weeks, which means my students will miss their field trip teaching experience. I'm also not optimistic that Penn State will reopen this semester, nor that we will be able to host school programs at the environmental center I work at for the rest of this season... so I'm looking for ideas related to how I could have students engage with a meaningful environmental education teaching experience? I've thought about them videoing themselves... are there others? Thanks all... this is a challenging time we are living through, but I am trying to be creative!
COVID-19: moving EE class online, ideas?
I don't have a good answer yet, but only want to say you're not alone. We're working on figuring out our EE intensive field practicum spring quarter, and at this point on-line has not been mandated, but various travel restrictions and partner school district closures have been announced. I wouldn't be surprised if on-line is mandated before spring happens, so we are planning for such contingencies. No good answers yet. Long-term we want to resist the possible tendency to set non-face-to-face learning and/or non-community & field-based, as a new normal. So documenting the loss of achievement of learning outcomes might be important.
Hi Lucy - I don't think my first reply to you went through...so I shall try again! I am in the same boat over here at Clarion University. I'm sure you are already connected with Laurie and Mark at Shaver's Creek. I will be reaching out also to Eric Rensel at Parker Dam State Park - he does an awesome online maple sugaring program that the students could perhaps engage with. Also, Ben Porkolab at the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (the Elk Visitor Center in Benezette) offers online programs learning about the elk herd. I've done both with my students and although not the same as being there in person, have made good EE connections. Finally, I am thinking about reaching out to Carissa Longo at DCNR to see what programs will still be available at the state parks across PA. If they are still running programs, maybe your students could take a PLT or Project Wild workshop? The struggle is real.
Hi Lucy et al.,
Yes, we also went online or distance up here in Alaska. However, because I have many students living in rural locations, we already facilitate all of our courses hybrid (face-to-face) and audio-video distance delivery. I have many ideas from my place-based education course that I could share with you. But I wonder, what if we take this opportunity to bridge our students together in a deeper more critical conversation about the role of technology/online platforms and environmental education? Or how does/will the current epidemic of COVID-19 affect the work that we do in EE? I am open to ideas- dialogue and opportunities to turn our current crises into an opportunity to work together across institutional, geographical, and cross-cultural boundaries?
Carie
Carie, I totally agree and am certainly looking to integrate this timely/important conversation into a sustainability class that I also teach. I've really been considering how to just engage in authentic conversation with my students about what this means for EE and the work we do to provide positive outdoor experiences for youth in our communities (which are mostly rural). But then I read the "remote learning teaching tips for faculty" sent by the PSU administration imploring us to continue to teach synchronously and to the original semester content. I feel so stretched and the emotional/mental labor of this process feels overwhelming at times! Thanks to everyone that has provided suggestions/comments/responses. I know I'm not the only one in this boat and it feels helpful to have a community of support!
Hello,
Thanks for all of the posts and ideas. We are moving to alternative teaching methods on March 30, after an extended spring break. I'm not counting on being back together with students face-to-face.
Some things I'm thinking about...
-Holding synchronous meetings in Zoom that are recorded so students can watch later, if issues arise. Through this technology, I can take them outside and on other field trips that we would otherwise engage in as a class. I can also break the class into smaller groups for discussions and working on projects.
-Still requiring peer teaching through Zoom--they can take us anywhere with the app on their phone and gain some experience using this technology that they might want to use in the future with homeschool groups or groups from distant locations.
-Hosting an online environmental issues forum through Common Ground for Action. I've had students participate with this in the past and thought it was interesting how you could see us move to common ground. If possible, I'll let you know when we are doing it and invite you to join in.
-For those in their practical semester, recruit schools for online programming. Additionally, these can be recorded for underclassmen to view and critique in place of an observation assignment (where they are to go and see EE in action).
-Consider offering additional trainings and certifications online. For example, this could be a certification through the National Association for Interpretation. Another idea is to offer a Project Learning Tree facilitator workshop--where my students could then offer PLT workshops in the future.
-Review the many, many online resources that I'm seeing and consider additional opportunities.
-I'm game to collaborate and hold broader conversations with you and your students. I think it would be helpful for us to start that conversation. If you are interested, please complete this Doodle for times on Thursday and Friday to meet through Zoom to discuss possibilities: https://doodle.com/poll/gxdaspkqwws7c8ek

Hello,
Based on the responses to the Doodle poll, we will meet online on Friday morning from 10-11am Central time. Please use this Zoom link to join in: https://uwsp.zoom.us/j/671182892
We will be sharing and brainstorming ways to move college courses online.

I wanted to add a few ideas for teaching EE online. I created an Intro to EE course recently and I found a few things that are active that can be done online. One source that is helpful is GLOBE.gov. I will be using it to have students create their own diagram by first taking a picture of an outdoor area and then using their knowledge of the energy cycles and "spheres" to create a diagram like someone would see in a textbook. I also found a fun activity that compares the Lorax by Dr. Seuss with the "Truax" which was written by the wood industry. I will join the zoom session on Friday as well.

Thank you for sharing these ideas and bring us together so that we can quickly pivot our course delivery. My students have been planning both captive and non-captive presentations. All public events have been cancelled for the rest of the semester. As other have mentioned, my course will now connect remotely. The Zoom meeting tomorrow will be so helpful with ideas for providing my students with ways to transform the work they have done so far into a meaningful, educational experience. Thank you!
I have attached the final project that my students will engage with in lieu of their place-based teaching experience. It's not the same, but it is at least a relevant and timely project they can sink their teeth into for the next several weeks! Feel free to adapt for your class purposes...

I cannot attend tomorrow, but wanted to pass on a creative idea I heard here at Duke. Duke (and many other sites) have a lot of free background, or B-roll, film footage available. If students were already expected to/trained it/able to create a video, they could create something using only available b-roll...

I showed them this just to get their creative juices flowing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MHn9Q5NtdY it's obviously not entirely connected to EE activities, but it gives them a sense of how to demo an activity so that someone could then go and do it...

Hello All,
What a wonderful sharing of ideas and resources. I know that many of you introduce your students to the Guidelines for Excellence:
https://naaee.org/our-work/programs/guidelines-excellence
You may not know that we have developed a series of workshop modules that help folks dive deeper into each of the guidelines publications:
https://naaee.org/our-work/programs/guidelines-excellence/workshop-resou...
The workshop modules were designed for face-to-face workshops (typically 5-7 hours). But, I'm wondering if many of the activities could be adapted for online use, especially using a flipped classroom model where the students do the readings and work in small groups to complete an activity (via phone or skype or ?) and then, the class time is focused on reporting out and debriefing????
We've been thinking that we needed to build some better online opportunities for folks related to the Guidelines for Excellence. I'm more than happy to work with some folks to try this out! Email me if you are interested: borasimmons@gmail.com
For the Guidelines for Excellence, we've offered some webinars over the years.
This set of webinars were presented in 2012 (beware - the technology has gotten much better):
https://naaee.org/eepro/learning/webinars/guidelines-excellence-webinar-...
And, here's a more recent webinar that introduces Community Engagement: Guidelines for Excellence:

Becca- thanks for sharing these resources! I wasn't able to join the previous Zoom meeting, but it's been helpful to see what was discussed. I am *hoping* that I can join this upcoming Friday (April 3); I have two young kiddos at home, so between teaching two classes online and juggling the childcare, it's been tough to squeeze in extra meetings, but I will do my best!
The project I posted about in the above chat is off and running and the students are pretty enthused to be engaged with something that will go on the Shaver's Creek website as a resource for families! While this can't replace the original field trip teaching experience that they would have gotten this semester, it's a contribution that speaks to the brave new world we find ourselves in!
I am looking forward to Friday's Zoom meeting. Feels good that we are all creating assignments in a similar fashion as we move to online learning. I want to share this link to BEETLES

Hi all! I'm a program manager for an environmental education internship program at the University of Arizona. We are currently thinking forward to the Fall 2020 semester and brainstorming a leadership development program for undergraduate students to accompany our environmental science outreach program to local K-12 schools. I'm curious to hear if you have any suggestions for how to build an effective leadership development program online assuming classes do not resume in person for the Fall 2020 semester? Any tips will be appreciated. Thank you so much.
