Best Training Programs - Interpretation

Hello, I'm new here. I'm not a EE professional, but I am exploring a career in EE. My interest is roving interpretation / interpretive ranger. I have volunteered doing it and would now like to try an internship but I'm stuck about where to go..........I'm sure since this groups focus is on guidelines for creating excellence in EE programming provided to the public, you all know at least some places where they are and are not doing a good job at this. And whoever is, probably has a strong training program for staff.

I would like to know where some of the best training / internship programs are (for interpretation) in the country, in terms of leadership, support, training, and working conditions / communication.

1. Which national parks?
2. Which state parks?
3. Which non-profits?
4. Which for-profits?
5. Which other?

Who has the best programs? What do you all think? Thanks.

Hi Denise,
Welcome! I'm not sure if this is quite what you're looking for, but I figured I'd send it your way just in case. There are quite a few outdoor schools in California that offer year-long naturalist training internships. They don't look much like the interpretive training or certificate programs I'm aware of, but they provide really top-notch training in outdoor science and environmental education. A few that come to mind are Foothill Horizons Outdoor School (full disclosure, I did an internship at Foothill!), Walker Creek Ranch, San Mateo Outdoor School, Sierra Outdoor School, and San Joaquin Outdoor School. I've had direct experience with alumni from each program, and I've been consistently impressed! Many people use the internship as a jumping-off point into an education focused career of some kind, including interpretation. I hope this is helpful, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have! -Rae

Hi Rae - I'm totally interested. Glad you posted this. Thank you. One question - is the "Sierra Outdoor School" connected to the Sierra Club? For more specific questions, should I contact you directly or is here okay?
