The Great Backyard Bird Count (Feb. 18-21, 2022)

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a Cornell Lab of Ornithology Community (citizen) Science project, celebrating its 25th year in 2022!

This project is open to all and is a great way to engage new audiences in conservation through bird watching. The GBBC involves identifying, counting, and reporting bird sightings in your area (backyard, park, etc.) Participants can count anytime during the four day period, making this a convenient way to contribute to ornithology, even amidst busy schedules.

Bird watching is a growing and popular outdoor activity and often serves as a gateway for more conservation engagement in participants. It can be as simple as having friends over for coffee to watch the bird feeders or get in some winter wanderings with a scientific purpose.

Let us know if you've done or are doing the GBBC and share your experiences and ideas for engaging your community.

My 8-12 year old group just did the count today. We didn't see a lot of birds, but several students expressed enjoying the time focused time in nature.

Thanks for sharing Lori Ann. I think helping kids (and adults) have a positive outdoor experience is key for setting a conservation foundation, especially when it's shared with others. Best, Jason
