BUILD THE FUTURE: Eight prizes are up for grabs as part of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education’s (ORISE) September student competition! It’s an engineering design challenge that asks students to develop a solution to a problem in their community. Submissions require a worksheet or presentation describing their solution for a chance to win a 3D Pen or M3D Micro+ Printer.

CALLING ALL STUDENTS!!
Students can make a difference in their communities! One former ORISE competition winner, Lydia Denton did just that when she designed a car seat device that notifies parents and emergency officials when the temperature inside a car reaches 102 degrees. This invention could help save many children who have accidentally been left in their car seats. Do you see a problem in your community that you could solve? The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) wants you to design and build a prototype of your solution for a chance to win a 3D Pen or M3D Micro+ Printer! Details for grades K-2nd:
A project should include a completed worksheet that goes through the engineering design process.
A completed worksheet should have all six of the boxes filled out, either by writing and/or drawing.
Do not include your last name on your worksheet- just first name and state. You can put your personal information on the submission form, but for your privacy when we upload, we will need your worksheet without personal identification.

Projects will be graded based on a rubric.
Winners will be announced mid-October.
Details for grades 3rd-12th:
A project should include a presentation of either a video or a PowerPoint that includes every step of the engineering design process (ask, research, imagine, plan, create, test, and improve) of your build solution. You will need to build a prototype of the solution design that you come up with and add pictures to your presentation. If you need information on the Engineering Design Process, you can find it here.
You will need to find a problem, design a solution, and build a solution prototype.
Building a prototype can be a simpler version of your solution that shows the concepts of the solution as well as the outward appearance. It should be a scaled down version of your solution. This can be built with items found in your house or yard.

If your submission is a link (example WeVideo, Vimeo, or Google), please make sure the privacy and sharing settings allow reviewers to access it. If it is not accessible, it may not be scored.
How to Enter:
To enter the contest, complete the form at https://orausurvey.orau.org/n/EngineeringDesign.aspx and attach your file. Make sure you include your parent or guardian’s contact information so we can get their permission to post your file on our website. The contest opens on Tuesday, September 1, 2020. The deadline to submit is 8:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.
You must be a student in a U.S., U.S. territory, or DoDEA School.
Students in any schooling situation, including public, private, and homeschool are eligible to enter the competition.
Students are eligible to win 2 ORISE competitions in a 12 month period.
