Overview:
This full time, 3-month position at Walking Mountains Science Center is responsible for serving the organization with a personal commitment to awakening a sense of wonder and inspiring environmental stewardship and sustainability though natural science education. The Summer Educator prepares, supports, and co-teaches our week-long day summer science camps, overnight camps, and Earth Explorers program.
Responsibilities:
Program Development:
- Organize and maintain curriculum and materials.
- Participate in ongoing program evaluation and revision.
- Field Instruction:
- Work as a team with other instructors and Walking Mountains staff.
- Plan and prepare environmental education lessons based on pre-set curriculum.
- Co-teach at least one backcountry hut overnight experience. During this trip you will provide overnight supervision to campers.
- Lead field experiences throughout the summer for campers entering 1st-12th in all weather conditions. The majority of these programs are for campers entering 1st-6th.
- Attend occasional evening /weekend programs and events.
Program Coordination:
- Rotate ‘Lead Instructor’ responsibilities and assist Summer Programs Coordinator with program logistics and coordination.
- Participate and provide feedback on summer programs and logistics in weekly debrief sessions.
- Take program photos and collect camper work to be used for website updates and development efforts.
- Participate in regular program team meetings.
- Communicate with parents of campers before and during the camper’s experience in a professional manner.
Operations & Risk Management:
- Assist with upkeep and maintenance of vehicles and program resources including first aid supplies, teaching supplies/ equipment, field gear, specimens, and library books
- Maintain a clean shared workspace and fulfill facility cleaning and upkeep responsibilities
- Safely transport students in 15-passenger vans.
- Maintain required medical certifications.
- Evaluate environmental conditions and make safety decisions that incorporate Walking Mountains’ emergency protocol and current wilderness emergency medical procedure
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
- BA/BS in science, education, or an environmental science-related field
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications; Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid preferred
- Experience with formal or informal education of children in a school or camp setting.
- Enthusiasm for educating children about the natural environment while expanding personal knowledge of Rocky Mountain ecology.
- Positive, self-motivated, organized, and creative individual who can work independently and as part of a team. Walking Mountains Science Center hires friendly, energetic and professional people.
- Ability to hike up to 3 miles, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Compensation: Housing provided at River Edge Apartment Complex, $225 weekly stipend, and 2 weeks of extensive training.
Duration of Position: May 30-August 18, 2017. You will work Monday-Friday during this period.
