START DATE: March 20, 2017

DURATION: Full Time, 4.5 Months (Spring and Fall seasons – this position also fills the role of Course Director in one of our four summer programs), Seasonal Exemption

LOCATION: Thompson Island – Boston, MA

POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Programs Course Director (School Year CD) is responsible for oversight of every aspect of course quality, delivery, and safety for Connections and Discovery Courses during the school year. The CD is expected to provide 24-hour support for Field Staff throughout the duration of the course to assist with curriculum support, behavior management, medical emergencies, and evacuation procedures. The CD serves as the primary liaison between facilitators, clients and island operations. This includes leading course briefing and prep meetings, development of course schedule, working with logistics staff, kitchen staff and other TIOBEC departments to ensure efficient course management and delivery within the parameters of the island systems. The Youth Programs Course Director will also fill the role of Course Director in the summer season for one of our four summer programs (see summer openings for more information on these positions).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze Medical Forms, taking note of any red flags, and consulting the Program Manager with questions
  • Contact client organization to go over course logistics (i.e. boat times, overnight information, goals and expectations, etc.)
  • Directly assist in the supervision, encouragement, and discipline of students.
  • Provide engaging, nurturing, and compassionate leadership representative of Outward Bound and the organization.
  • Create and disseminate a course schedule tailored to client’s goals, needs, and expectations, while taking into consideration island logistics and staff needs
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff, logistics staff, and operations staff
  • Organize and lead pre-course prep meetings for Field Staff and Site Managers
  • Provide 24-hour support for Field Staff and Site Managers including, but not limited to; behavior management, medical emergencies, curriculum support, coaching, evacuation procedures, relay inclement weather information and any other potential or real safety information
  • Mentor and coach Field Staff in the field by providing meaningful and instructive feedback both in real time and during check-ins
  • Uphold and promote Thompson Island Charter Operating Policies and Procedures (COPPs)
  • Serve as primary contact for client organization throughout the duration of course
  • Maintain communication with Program Manager, kitchen staff, operations staff, and any other TIOBEC department area that is pertinent to successful course delivery
  • Produce all necessary post-program paperwork and reporting within proper time constraints including, but not limited to; end of course reports, program attendance, incident reports, and peer evaluations
  • Complete a Course Director Report, Client Report, and any additional course feedback forms as instructed by the PM
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3-4 years relevant field experience
  • 2-3 years relevant management experience
  • Wilderness First Responder & CPR certification
  • Thompson Island Challenge Course Site Manager Certification preferred
  • Passion for youth development
  • Experience managing high ropes challenge courses a plus
  • Experience leading field science programs for middle school students
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Experience working with youth with a history of anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, and learning disabilities
  • Experience training, developing and managing staff
  • Positive, solution-oriented, can-do attitude required
  • Strong organization skills required
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
  • Strong decision making abilities and judgement required
  • Ability to both give and receive positive and constructive feedback

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 21 years of age
  • All positions reporting hours to the island, are asked to assist loading/unloading cargo from the boat as able.  This involves lifting and walking with parcels upwards of 50lbs on and off moving docks and up/down ramps
  • Must be able to be on feet an average of 5+ hours per day
