Overview:

The Denver Public Schools’ Balarat Outdoor Education program (balarat.dpsk12.org) is seeking a full-time, Assistant Facilities Caretaker who will work and live at the school district’s outdoor education center. The assistant will work in concert with the Lead Facilities Caretaker to maintain and enhance the site.

 

As a brief introduction, the physical site is approximately 750 acres of forested land in the foothills northwest of Boulder, Colorado. The following tasks are included in the responsibilities of the job:

Forestry – thinning, erosion control, weed control, trail building, fire mitigation; Roads – maintenance and snow removal; Structures – maintenance, preservation, and custodial care; Water/Wastewater – maintain, monitor, and service; Outbuildings – build, maintain, repair, stock firewood, clean latrines; Janitorial – routine cleaning of three dormitory buildings & a dining hall, trash removal, laundry; Equipment – run, maintain, and repair heavy and small equipment; Challenge Elements – build, maintain, repair, prepare, and coach. The work can be physically strenuous and is often preformed in outdoor settings.

 

Balarat Caretakers work a full-year schedule. There is time off for traditional school holidays but caretakers’ breaks are not as extensive as those that are familiar to students. Caretakers are the main point of contact for emergency personnel and unsolicited persons on the site and are on-call when students are in residence.
