Overview:
The Compass School is a K-8 public charter school in Kingston, RI, primarily serving residents of Washington County. We seek an experienced school director to serve as mentor to teachers and staff, champion of school philosophy, and cultivator of the school’s educational mission. Key school features are multi-age classrooms and project-based curricula, with a focus on environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Students are challenged to be problem solvers, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. Students and teachers are passionately engaged in “charting new directions for living and learning.” The goal is an academic program that fosters excellence while preparing students to be responsible citizens and leaders in their local and global communities.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The roles of the Director are:
• Articulate and implement the school’s vision
• Provide instructional leadership
• Recruit, develop, supervise, and evaluate staff
• Recruit and supervise students
• Lead, manage, and evaluate school programs and school curriculum
• Support development initiatives
• Coordinate building operations
• Cultivate and support the strategic plan
• Uphold and enforce policies established by The Compass School Council, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including the upcoming Charter Renewal process.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Certification as a Building Level Administrator (PK-12) as defined by the Rhode Island Department of Education or eligibility for certification
2. Either of the following two educational requirements:
Master’s degree with a concentration in education or an advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution and graduate coursework in education (coursework areas include: school/community relations; curriculum and development; organization and administration of schools; supervision of instruction; supervision and evaluation of professional staff; educational research; program evaluation; fiscal planning and management; school law [federal and state laws and regulations])
Master’s degree (any field) and a doctoral degree with a concentration in education
4. A minimum of three years of experience as a school administrator
5. Demonstrated leadership in primary and/or secondary education
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Three years of experience in a charter or alternative school
2. Doctoral level degree
3. Demonstrated experience in environmental sustainability and social responsibility
4. Demonstrated experience in external fundraising, including preparation of grant applications and development activities
