Overview:

The intern will support the visitor services program at the refuges, including but not limited to:

  • Welcome visitors to the information center. Assist with the operation of the visitor center such as putting together informational materials, performing maintenance of trails and surrounding area;
  • Research the natural and cultural history of the refuge to use in outreach efforts;
  • Develop, design and deliver formal and informal educational programs to be conducted at the visitor center or at a special event; and
  • Outreach could include staffing informational booths at events in the community, designing non-personal educational media, and/or conducting interpretive or educational programs to special interest groups.

Location and Timeline:

Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is in southern Nevada, near the town of Alamo. Pahranagat NWR is about 1 hour and 30 minutes’ drive from Las Vegas. The refuge was established in 1964 and protects almost 5,400 acres of wetland, riparian, and open-water habitat at the southern end of the Pahranagat Valley. Home to Nevada’s highest nesting population of southwestern willow flycatchers, the refuge manages important habitat for the plants and animals associated with southern Nevada’s rare wetland and riparian areas.

This is a 3-month position that begins July 2016 to September 2016

Other considerations: 

The Refuge is located in a remote location, miles out of town.  It is a requirement that the intern have personal transportation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, interpretation, natural resources, environmental science, wildlife biology; desired. Applicants currently enrolled in related programs will be considered;
  • Ability to clearly convey conservation messages to staff, volunteers and the public;
  • Ability to self-direct and self-motivate;
  • Tolerant of working in variable weather conditions, willing and able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and on uneven terrain;
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals and follow safe working practices;
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; and
  • Ability to pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.

Refuge bunkhouse, with private rooms, but shared bathrooms and living areas, are available.
