About the Organization

Keep Omaha Beautiful (KOB) is an environmental nonprofit organization with the mission to foster environmental and community stewardship through education, service, and advocacy. Each year, we work with thousands of students, volunteers, supporters, and partner organizations. KOB’s primary efforts include environmental education programming, public outreach and events, and community service projects.

About the Position

This leadership role is responsible for overseeing operations, fundraising, programming, advocacy, team development, community partnerships, and public relations. In partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director also ensures successful implementation and progress monitoring of the organization’s strategic plan and annual goals.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Reports to KOB’s Board of Directors
  • Full-time (40 hours/week) with occasional evening or weekend work for community events
  • Works at KOB’s office located at 1819 Farnam Street, Suite 306 (there is also the opportunity to work a day or two per week from home)
  • Competitive compensation starting at $80,000+ based on talents, skills, and experience

Required Education & Experience

  • A degree (or equivalent life/work experience) in nonprofit management, business administration, environmental science, education, public policy, or another relevant field
  • At least three years of leadership and management experience, involving effective oversight of a budget and supervision of staff
  • Overall professional experience consisting of involvement with one or more of the following: fundraising, program delivery, project management, community outreach, advocacy/public policy, strategic planning, human resources, financial administration, and/or operations

Ideal Experience and Skills: Additional Preferences (the following are not required, but they are definitely beneficial)

  • Biliterate and bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Advanced degree in one of the above noted fields and/or specialized training in sustainability-related topics
  • Strong professional relationships with foundations and knowledge of the local philanthropic community
  • Experience effectively coaching and helping develop employees and past success working with or on a nonprofit board of directors
  • Experience developing/evaluating educational programming, especially focused on the environment

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Work with the Board of Directors and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through effective programming, strategic planning, and community outreach
  • Demonstrate collaborative leadership that fosters organizational core values and inclusive engagement

Financial & Operational Management

  • Ensure proper fiscal record-keeping, internal control procedures, and financial reporting
  • Oversee administrative functions and implement policies/protocols that ensure operational efficiency

Fundraising

  • Cultivate and maintain connections with donors, foundations, and other funding partners
  • Oversee the development and implementation of short- and long-term fundraising plans to increase revenue

Board Relations

  • Work with the Board to ensure proper governance and effective implementation/monitoring of the organization’s strategic plan
  • Assist the Board in setting annual priorities and support the efforts of the committees

Team Development

  • Lead and support a dynamic team, currently consisting of five full-time staff members
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, payroll, and employee benefits

Programming & Partnerships

  • Work with staff to strategize, execute, and evaluate all programming to ensure it amplifies KOB’s impact
  • Identify and foster organizational partnerships that support KOB’s mission and help better serve the community

Public Relations & Advocacy

  • Strengthen the visibility and credibility of the organization via oversight of strategic communications, positioning, and branding
  • In partnership with the board, guide KOB's advocacy efforts focused on local policies and improvements that support environmental stewardship in Omaha
  • Given the nature and scope of the Executive Director role, there will be other duties that are not listed above. The ideal candidate will enjoy a range of responsibilities and embrace additional duties as they emerge.

We are a very active and mobile team that conducts work throughout the city. In light of this, we ask that candidates also possess the following:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle. KOB is supportive of active multi-modal transportation (walk, bike, bus, carpool) and even provides a public transportation commuting benefit, but given the nature of our work and this position, reliable access to a vehicle is necessary
  • Must be able to work in a variety of settings, including an office environment with potential for several hours per day in front of a computer and periodically at offsite/outdoor locations to assist with community events and programming as necessary
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds in order to assist with moving program equipment and setting up for community events when needed
