Overview:
Kids in the Woods Summer Day Camp offers week-long day camp experiences (Monday through Friday) for kids entering grades K – 8. Friends of Reinstein Woods offers these camps in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which owns and operates Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center. Each week of camp offers age-appropriate activities, aimed at certain age groups, designed to promote curiosity and awareness of the natural environment.
The Environmental Educator serves as the "face" of summer camp programming and coordinates all summer camp activities, including: training and supervising three summer camp counselors, updating camp curriculum and safety plan, ordering supplies and materials, and assisting with registration and marketing.
During the school year, the Environmental Educator will lead watershed programming designed to engage students in hands-on data collection and analysis. This includes coordinating and leading weekly Watershed STEM in the Schoolyard after-school programs at up to three sites in spring 2022 and designing and co-leading schoolyard field investigations with up to ten classrooms during the 2022-2023 school year.
The Educator will also coordinate the Environmental Justice (EJ) Stewards Program, a ten-week program to engage high-school students in local watershed issues and stewardship. Students participate in weekly virtual sessions with environmental professionals and advocacy organizations involved in Great Lakes ecosystem-based management. Students will participate in field trips to explore local ecosystems and restorations projects. The EJ Stewards Program will run in the spring and fall of 2022.
The Environmental Educator will assist with recruiting students for the EJ Stewards program, schedule and facilitate guest presenters, and plan and lead field trips in spring and fall. They will also support the students in implementing a stewardship project and coordinate a watershed breakfast with local elected officials in Fall 2022.
