Overview:

Responsibilities and Expectations
Development
● Primary responsibility for development activities and delegates fundraising responsibilities per development plan to Development Manager and fundraising committee
● Creates and oversees development plan
● Events: Implements or oversees major events including Into the Wild or similar event
● Grants: Stewards and cultivates key grant funders
● Major Donors: Stewards and cultivates major donor development
● Creates and Oversees Communications/Marketing
● Develops and oversees communications plan, including social media, newsletter,
and event calendar
Strategic Leadership
● Identify and direct new fundraising, marketing, and communications efforts in alignment with the strategic plan
● Liaison to Fundraising and Operations Committee
● Point of contact for financial resources with EII
● In collaboration with the co-Executive Director - Programs
○ Provide co-leadership and vision to BAWT staff and the BAWT Advisory Council in order to carry out the development goals of the organization
○ Co-direct strategic plan process with support from the Advisory Council, external contractors, and any other key stakeholders
Financial Management
● Prepare annual Development Budget
● Ensure a healthy, diverse source of funding that sustains programs
● Work with staff and the Advisory Council to prepare and execute an annual fundraising plan that aligns with the budget, strategic plan, and annual work plans
● In collaboration with the co-Executive Director - Programs
○ Participate in monthly calls with the Treasurer to go over financial statements, forecasts, and trends.
○ Implement annual budget, including the preparation of cash flow reports,
and monitoring daily cash flow.
○ Serve as check request signer
Management and Administration
● Supervise Development Manager and other future roles
● Prepare annual individual staff development plans (“smart goals”), quarterly check-ins, and end of year personal performance development assessment for all
direct reports. Incorporate strengths-based coaching for staff through Gallup’s Strengths Finder (or another tool.)
● Main point of contact for IT, delegate as needed
● In collaboration with the co-Executive Director - Programs
○ Co-Lead staff meetings when needed
○ Co-manage performance management process for employees
○ Co-lead HR compliance, including oversight/maintenance of organization records and communication with HR representative at Earth Island Institute as needed
Programs
● Represent BAWT as needed in the media and/or other community events
● Support program team with grant proposals and reports
● Support program events as needed
Advisory Council/Committees
● Participate in all Advisory Council, Fundraising and Operations, and Finance Committee meetings
● Work with the Advisory Council to recruit, interview, onboard, and train new
members of the Council as needed
● Provide support for the Advisory Council and committee meetings as needed

● Co-Executive Director for Development is expected to maintain the highest level of communication and integrity in working with staff, interns, and volunteers at every level in addition to stakeholders and the public
● Attend regular meetings and events, including some evenings and weekends meetings, Advisory Council and Committee meetings, and those required for Earth Island Institute’s Project Directors
Qualifications
● A strong connection to and commitment to the communities served by BAWT
● Deep personal connection to the transformative power of the outdoors and a passion for the outdoors and youth
● Nonprofit development professional experience with experience setting and achieving revenue targets
● Excellence in organizational leadership with the ability to empathetically manage and develop teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
● Demonstrated commitment to developing and implementing high-quality, effective development plans
● Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new donors and funders. Thorough understanding of foundation and major donor fundraising, including
experience working directly with donors and foundation program officers
● Strong analysis skills and fluency with CRMs and Microsoft Excel
● Strong, persuasive written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills, including working effectively in collaboration with diverse groups
● Unwavering commitment to BAWT’s mission; integrity, emotionally intelligent, and self-directed
● College degree in a relevant field or commensurate experience preferred
● Lived experience as related to facing barriers to accessing the outdoors is honored and valued
Additional Qualifications Desired
● Focus/orientation toward data-driven development evaluation and outcomes
● Desire to coach advisory council members, staff, and volunteers regarding
fundraising campaigns
● Willingness to grow knowledge around communications
● Experience working with a Board of Advisors or an Advisory Council
Additional Details
● Salary range of $70,000 to $80,000. This position also includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision benefits, vacation starting at 2 weeks per year (incrementally increases to 4 weeks after 2 years), major holidays, 2
floating holidays after 6 months, and a paid holiday week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
● Location: Oakland, CA (main office); additional offices in San Francisco, CA and Milpitas, CA.
● Travel: Limited travel is expected beyond the Bay Area and Northern California
