Overview:

Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki is seeking to round out its team of science educators responsible for leading its trademark honors natural history and ecology course. In addition to classroom instruction, this teaching team spends approximately ten hours each week with students in field labs. During these twice weekly field labs, students practice their powers of observation and develop an in-depth understanding of Maine’s natural history through hands-on study and immersion in the natural world. Field labs are conducted across Maine’s ecosystems which include rocky inter-tidal zones, sandy shores, salt marshes, ponds, streams, bogs and forests. 

The Chewonki Foundation (Chewonki.org) is a year-round, nonprofit environmental education center based on a 400-acre peninsula in mid-coast Maine. Our mission is to inspire transformative growth, teach appreciation and stewardship of the natural world, and challenge people to build thriving, sustainable communities throughout their lives.

The ideal candidate for this position should have a deep appreciation for the natural world; a high level of interest in teaching exceptionally motivated high school juniors in a semester school that is committed to promoting the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability;  as well as building strong relationships with students and colleagues.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is in-line with that of other small northern New England boarding schools and will be based largely on experience.  Housing is included as part of living on campus. This is a full-time residential position on an August to mid-June schedule (~10 weeks vacation/year). Benefits include housing, meals when programs are in session, health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance, long term disability, 403B retirement plan (currently matching up to 4.5% after one year of service) and access to professional development funds.
