SEASONAL Position from June 1, 2020 – August 5, 2020

Full Time - 40 hours per week

  • June 1st – June 5th: Staff Training / Camp Prep
  • June 8th – July 31st: 8 weeks of Camp (no camp July 2nd – 3rd)
  • August 3rd – August 5th: Camp Wrap

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is currently seeking two (2) seasonal Summer Zoo Camp Aides for the Education Department.  This position will assist the Zoo Camp Director with day-to-day operations that include running before and after care, creating and managing class rosters, overseeing lunch, helping to supervise ZooTeen! volunteers, and interacting with parents and caregivers.  As needed, the Camp Aides will assist with and/or instruct classes based on the basic principles of life science, environmental science, zoology, ecology, and conservation science.  Will utilize biofacts and will help develop hands-on activities, crafts, and games that revolve around animal themes and nature play, take and organize camp photos, assist with camp prep and cleanup, light housekeeping, daily attendance, and record keeping.

Applicants must be available to work 7:30am to 4:00pm or 9:00am-5:30pm

Monday through Friday all 9 1/2 weeks.

Applicants must have completed two years of college and be able to pass a Level II background screening.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time and traverse Zoo grounds on foot in possibly adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and rain. Must be able to bend, squat, sweep, and lift 25 lbs. without difficulty.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biology, zoology and/or life science and previous teaching experience.  Must love kids and animals!  Previous teaching experience with children in an informal learning center such as a zoo, museum, nature center, or parks department is a plus.  An outgoing, self-starting, enthusiastic, team player personality combined with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances is essential for success in this position.  Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet search are required.
