Overview:
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Education Manager, this position serves as the primary on-site academic program instructor for the education department and conducts school group and other academic programs and tours.
- Develops programs that are aligned to Oregon and Next Generation Science Standards, Ocean Literacy Principles and incorporates the Aquarium's mission and conservation messaging.
- Develops and writes materials for teachers including backgound content information and pre, during and post visit lessons and activities.
- Develops and implements evaluation tools for programs; analyzes and reports on data, and modifies programs as needed and appropriate.
- Conducts school outreach programming a minimum of 1-2 weeks per year.
- Coordinates the hiring, training, scheduling and recognition of volunteers for academic programming.
- Coordinates with group cordinator in scheduling all on-site programs.
- Coordinates the acquisition and maintenance of all classroom and academic teaching supplies, AV equipment and materials.
- Coordinates special day events for the Aquarium.
- Assists in leading portions of training programs and workshops on content and pedagogy for volunteers, interns, practicum students and Aquarium staff.
- Assists with the care, handling and public interpretation of Ambassador Animals.
- Supervisory responsibilities include interns, volunteers, practicum students and seasonal staff.
- Mentors practicum students and interns - providing training, scheduling and evaluation.

Qualifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in education or related field is required.
- Minimum of three year's experience in education program development, instruction, interpretation and outreach is required.
- Strong writing, verbal and interpersonal skills that will allow the incumbent to work with staff and other individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, ages and beliefs.
- Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards and strong curriculum writing skills is required.
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer and software - Word and Excel programs is required.
- Must deomonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under limited supervision, both independently and in a team environment.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs if necessary, work in inclement weather at times and climb stairs.
- CPR/1st Aid Certification or ability to acquire upon hire is required.
- Valid driver's license or ability to acquire upon hire is required.
- Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
- Animal handling skills are preferred.
- Must be able to pass a criminal history background check.
Applicants must be willing to work weekends, holidays and occasional evenings, and to travel for overnight outreach trips. Wage information is available upon request.
