Program Overview:

AKA Science is a fun, hands-on, after-school science education program for elementary and early middle school students. Class topics vary by term, and include biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental science, earth science, and forensic science. AKA Science is culturally-responsive and committed to making high-quality science enrichment opportunities accessible to all students. AKA Science is FREE to most SUN community schools, and provides schools with field-tested curriculum and a complete supply kit.

Internship Description:

AKA Science is seeking enthusiastic Class Leaders to facilitate after school science classes at Portland public SUN community schools. Each AKA Science class is made up of 12-15 students in grades 4-6. AKA Science class terms are 8 weeks in length,and comprised of a single 1-hr session per week (with additional prep and clean-up time as needed).

Qualifications:

We are looking for applicants with a strong interest in science and experience (or education in) working with children (ideally in a classroom setting). Class Leaders must be able to pass a background check, travel to and from multiple sites, and independently deliver established curriculum through a culturally-responsive, trauma-informed lens. Bilingual, bi-cultural, and people of color strongly encouraged to apply.

Schedule:

Attend one 4-hour training (date/time TBD). Teach one-hour sessions in the afternoons (e.g. 3:30-4:30 depending on the school) plus ~15 minutes prep and clean-up time as needed. Courses are typically offered once per week between Monday-Thursday (depending on school).

Stipend:

Hourly pay is $15/hr (~$188 per class taught per term), preferentially seeking applicants available to teach 2-4 classes per term. Preferentially seeking applicants available to teach at least 2 consecutive terms.
