Overview:

The AmeriCorps member will serve as our Education and Outreach Coordinator. The member is the primary facilitator of our specimen-based “Nature in the Classroom” program (NIC). Main duties include teaching NIC lessons in schools, publicizing the program, and facilitating the use of NIC materials by local educators. The AmeriCorps member will also be involved in training teachers in NIC, coordinating and conducting behind-the-scenes tours of the museum, recruiting and training volunteer docents who assist with tours, and staffing the museum during open hours. Opportunities for practical museum experience include exhibit development, training in specimen preparation, and interaction with curatorial staff.

Member Responsibilities: The AmeriCorps member’s tasks will include teaching K-12 environmental science and natural history lessons; training and supporting teachers using museum programs; scheduling and supporting volunteers for museum tours and events; developing museum exhibits; promoting museum resources; and maintaining records of museum outreach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion for natural history and environmental education
  • Teaching experience or experience working with children in educational setting
  • Enthusiasm for museum collections
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate museum schedules
  • Excellent document preparation, reporting, and record-keeping skills
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • College degree, with strong background in biology or environmental sciences
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

AmeriCorps Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at start of service term
  • 10 1/2-month term of service, starting September 1, 2020 and ending July 15, 2021
  • Member must serve a minimum of 1,700 hours during the 10 1⁄2 month term of service
  • Complete and submit all necessary AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner
  • Complete and submit at least one article for the AmeriCorps ‘Stories of Service’ program each quarter
  • Attend all required AmeriCorps training and orientation events; and achieve the core competency trainings
  • Must have high school diploma, GED or commit to obtaining one during the term of service
  • U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident
  • Member may have part-time job or attend school provided it doesn’t interfere with schedule set at site

AmeriCorps Member Benefits:

  • A taxable, monthly stipend of $1,450 provided by Washington Service Corps
  • Upon successful completion of a full term of service, eligible members receive an education award of $5,815 provided by the National Service Trust
