Overview:

Description: URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking a qualified individual to assist the waterfront manager in conducting an eight-week free swim waterfront and small craft boating program on a 75-acre freshwater lake. Provide direct supervision to up to 50 campers ages 5-16. Assist waterfront manager during training weeks to provide water safety training to approximately 25 camp staff members. Abide by and enforce all waterfront rules and regulations and participate in on-going training, enrichment, and practice sessions. In addition to free-swim, lifeguarding responsibilities include canoe, kayak, paddleboard, and sunfish sailing supervision and instruction, leading waterfront festivals and other special events, and assisting with other camp activities when requested. All camps (overnight, teen, and two day camps) utilize a private lakefront.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a current Rhode Island Non-surf Lifeguard Certification (includes a minimum of Standard First Aid, adult/infant/child CPR or CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding, and passing the Rhode Island Non-surf test which is administered by the state and costs $20) and a valid driver’s license. Previous lifeguarding, small craft, or swim instruction experience preferred. All certifications must be current for entire summer.  Must be 16 years or older by first day of employment, 18 years old or older preferred. All final applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check.

Pay: Compensation includes $10.50 to $12.00 per hour depending on experience. Approximately 35 hours per week, depending on the waterfront schedule, 30 minute unpaid lunch. Six to nine-hour workday (varies depending on program scheduile); some evening work; generally a half day on Friday (3-6 hours).  Some weekend hours may be required.  No work when waterfront is closed due to inclement weather.
