Overview:

The Office and Grounds Assistant performs routine clerical tasks and assists with the administration of the office and day-to-day maintenance of a 60-acre facility. Duties could include, but are not limited to mowing grass, weeding, watering plants, pruning trees & shrubs; assisting with road & trail maintenance; cleaning facilities; recruiting, training, and supervising students & volunteers; planning lessons and leading field trips & tours; greeting visitors, enforcing policies, and answering emails & telephone calls; typing, filing, and data entry; processing purchase requests and facility reservations; assisting with event planning and fundraising; communicating with members & community organizations; advertising events; and maintaining the Arboretum calendar and social media.

The Office and Grounds Assistant will aid in the implementation of our strategic and master plans, particularly in the areas of enhanced engagement with the local community, hands-on education outreach programs and teacher training, and appreciation of nature through the arts and recreation.

The University of Alabama Arboretum is a scientific institution that engages in teaching, research, and service with a primary emphasis on the ecology and biodiversity of Alabama. The Arboretum maintains plant collections for botanical education and appreciation and features walking trails through native woodlands; wildflower, experimental, and children’s gardens; and a collection of ornamental plants on the grounds and in greenhouses. The Arboretum’s programs promote the management, conservation, and sustainable use of natural resources and appreciation of nature through recreational activities and artistic endeavors.
