Environmental Educator

Part-time, temporary 30 hours, no benefits

This position has a duration of late March- early October with potential for extension, pending funding.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or qualifying experience: The selected candidate will have demonstrated experience and/or education in environmental education
• Excellent communication skills
• Competence with Microsoft Office software and email
• Weekday & weekend availability late March- early October
• A demonstrated passion for environmental/science education

Preferred Qualifications

• National Association for Interpretation training
• Spanish language skills
• Familiarity with Project WILD, WET, Learning Tree, Aquatic or additional outdoor education curriculum
• Experience creating lessons connected to state and national learning standards
• Knowledge of native Delaware species, watershed restoration techniques, or science communication practices

Description of the Position

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays is searching for a passionate and creative person to join their education team. The Environmental Educator will support the activities of the Outreach & Education department under the supervision of the Outreach and Education Coordinator. The Environmental Educator will have the opportunity to develop, schedule and present research-based lessons and activities for the Center’s James Farm Education Program and Public Programming series. The Environmental Educator will also act as the lead Instructor for the spring semester of hands-on extension activities for middle school students at the James Farm Ecological Preserve. The Environmental Educator will support educational components of volunteer and outreach events, which will require occasional weekend work.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and provide hands-on environmental education to student groups and members of the public in groups up to 60 people
• Act as lead instructor for the James Farm Educational Program
• Schedule in-school and public educational events and programs, including; homeschool and scout events
• Coordinate with Science and Restoration staff to provide outreach and education during volunteer events or presentations
• Assist in the development of Inland Bays focused curriculum tied to Next Generation Science Standards for distribution to schools in the watershed
• Report hours, program attendance, and feedback on programming to Outreach and Education Coordinator through electronic means in a timely manner.
• Communicate the importance of the Inland Bays in a variety of outdoor and informal settings
• Assist with communications and marketing, including providing content for social media and blog posts
• Assist with the creation of the Education track for the National Estuary Program meeting in October 2019.
• Other tasks as assigned by the Outreach and Education Coordinator and/or Executive Director.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in the field at the James Farm Ecological Preserve in Ocean View, DE. Field assignments may require bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, lifting up to 25 pounds, pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, stooping, walking in rough terrain, wading into water up to the waist, and occasionally contending with adverse weather conditions requiring special clothing and safety precautions. Funding for this position is contingent on the continued availability of grant funding. Evening or weekend work is sometimes required. A flexible schedule is permitted. The position is subject to the Center’s Office Policy Manual.

Compensation

Pay Rate: $16/ hour
