Overview:
The Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP), a 501(c)3 non-profit National Estuary Program, has been dedicated to preserving and restoring the waters and watershed near Assateague Island and Ocean City, Maryland for over twenty years. We are currently seeking creative, motivated applicants for a paid seasonal educator position focused on creating meaningful watershed experiences for teachers, students, residents, and seasonal visitors. MCBP provides both outdoor and classroom educational programs, as well as field-oriented opportunities for community outreach and service learning. The seasonal educator will gain invaluable experience working with a diverse range of audiences directly in the outdoors. In addition to experiencing the variety of exciting education offerings at MCBP, the seasonal educator will also learn the operation of a National Estuary Program, meet key environmental partners, participate in scientific monitoring, and expand their knowledge of the MD Coastal Bays and Delmarva Peninsula. This 7-month, 32-hour week, position will begin on April 1, 2019 and will run through October 31, 2019.
Primary Responsibilities :
❖ Research and design a new Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) for students of Worcester County, Maryland.
❖ Assist in the program development and facilitation of MCBP Estuary Explorers summer camps.
Additional responsibilities :
❖ Design and lead educational programs in schools, the local community, and at outdoor environmental education sites.
❖ Participate in the lesson planning to build upon the first ever MD Coastal Bays watershed curriculum.
❖ Work with public schools to engage students in conservation initiatives, such as habitat restoration and service projects, and to promote Green Schools.
❖ Communicate with a variety of ages and backgrounds in informal settings such as forests, marshes, and on the bay and beach.
❖ Plan and participate in teacher professional development workshops such as Project WILD, WET, and Learning Tree.
❖ Facilitate environmental stewardship for the general benefit of the coastal bay’s ecosystem.
❖ Assist in the interpretive design and development of outdoor conservation projects to enhance learning opportunities at the various properties.
❖ Work with other local environmental organizations, to create and implement county-wide environmental education initiatives, teacher workshops, and field trip opportunities.
❖ Help lead the 2nd Bay Day, an outreach festival encouraging bay-friendly behaviors for area residents.
❖ Gain grant writing skills.
❖ Assist with weekly social media outreach campaigns such as Watershed Wednesday and Funky Fauna Fridays.
❖ Assist MCBP’s science team as needed with restoration projects, monitoring, and field sampling.
Desired Qualifications:
❖ Bachelor’s degree: preferred degree in environmental science, biology, education, outdoor recreation, leadership, or other related field.
❖ Teaching experience to a variety of audiences.
❖ Can work and teach independently.
❖ Demonstrated ability to work as part of a small, dynamic team.
❖ Ability to work outside in a variety of conditions and able to lift 25 pounds.
