The Leslie Science & Nature Center has an exciting opportunity for a Wildlife Educator to partner with an extensive variety of wildlife in order to educate and inspire people of all ages in a variety of traditional and non-traditional settings. You will have the opportunity to increase the enjoyment and understanding of the cultural and natural resources of southeast Michigan ecosystems, promote environmental awareness and foster responsible stewardship.

Salary Range: $12.00/hour

Duties:

•Prepare for and deliver interactive and fun environmental education and interpretive programs utilizing our wildlife. Programs may include on-site field trips, outreach programs, after-school programs, scout activities, birthday programs and more.
•Respectfully handle and care for wildlife including feeding and cleaning; wildlife may include reptiles,
amphibians, small mammals including bats, raptors, insects, and arachnids.
•Ensure participants are using educational materials safely and in the intended manner.
•Assist with the training of volunteers.

Hours:

The team member in this role can anticipate working approximately 40 hours per week in a varied schedule including weeknights and weekends. The schedule varies from week to week dependent upon programming needs and working seven days in a week may be required.

Qualifications:

•Bachelors Degree in environmental education, interpretation, biology, natural resources or a related field preferred.
•Four plus years of experience in environmental education, interpretation, recreation, natural resources, education or a related field is desired.
•Prior experience working with children.
•Ability to work in a seven day per week, flexible schedule environment.
•Excellent customer relations skills with the ability to stay calm when dealing with emergencies.
•Ability to engage with children and adults from diverse backgrounds.
•Must be at least 18 years of age and able to receive a clean criminal background check & central registry clearance.
•Currently certified, or ability to be certified, in CPR and First Aid within 30 days of employment.
•Willing to get any needed vaccinations for wildlife handling.
•Ability and interest in working with a variety of live wildlife while working outside in all weather conditions.
•Able to walk long distances on uneven ground and lift at least 50 pounds.
•Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation preferred
