Overview:
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Schedule and coordinate onsite and offsite River Classroom, Caring Kids, and wildlife education programs, working with Office Manager and other team members.
- Work with Education & Outreach Manager to review and update programs and curriculum as needed. Work with Education Team to develop new programs as needed.
- Present educational programs on- and off-site to school groups throughout the year. Engage volunteers in assisting with education programs, in accordance with NMWC policies.
- Keep careful and accurate records of animal care and training, and program data.
- Work with team members to evaluate all programs and continually improve programming based upon feedback received.
- Participate in and present programs and activities at fundraising and educational events. Lead on-site tours and train volunteers to become tour leaders and program presenters. Work with Education & Outreach Manager to coordinate and lead summer camps as needed.
- Assist with development and maintenance of wildlife education program materials, including activities and marketing materials.
- Support Education Animal Curator (EAC) in caring for all Animal Ambassadors as needed, including on EAC’s days off. Assist with their training as assigned. Safely and professionally handle animals in accordance with all NMWC policies and procedures.
- Stay current on current trends and knowledge in education and animal care/training.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- A passion for NMWC’s mission, for teaching and learning, and a demonstrated experience in delivering educational programs. Deep understanding of issues facing wildlife and habitats.
- Successful teaching experience (formal or informal settings). Experience working with school age children, preferably teaching science or a related topic.
- Experience with program evaluation techniques and their effective application.
- Excellent writing and communication skills, including a demonstrated proficiency in and comfort with public speaking and presentations.
- Experience with the use of operant conditioning with wild animals, and a dedication to the welfare of captive animals.
- Experience caring for and handling captive wildlife, especially raptors.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, or a related field, and a strong background in science.
- Enthusiastic personality with a positive outlook and a can-do attitude.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak clearly in English so that written and verbal instructions can be given and followed.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work successfully with people of varying backgrounds, cultures, skill levels, and interests.
- EC schedule includes working at least one weekend day per week, and may include holidays and long or odd hours.
Successful experience working with volunteers is strongly preferred.
Certification as CIG or CIT from National Association of Interpretation is highly desireable.
Successful experience with grant writing or organizing events is a plus, as is the ability to speak Spanish.
