Overview:
Qualifications: Applicants must be enthusiastic, energetic, and committed. Must have experience and training in natural history and working with both children and adults in a residential atmosphere. Must have an ability to think critically about the fields of education and science and can demonstrate knowledge in those or other related fields. Wilderness First Responder and CPR training required (candidates can acquire before start date if they are not currently certified). Teaching, hiking and trip-leading experience required. Seeking applicants that want to commit for a year or more in order to deepen their teaching skills and develop new leadership skills.
Responsibilities: Work in all aspects of implementing year-round and summer residential environmental education programs for youth including: develop and teach daily natural history investigations that introduce and practice the routines of science learning. Conduct evening programs; co-lead backpacking trips; supervise campers in the lodge (2-3 nights per week during summer only), and other related environmental education activities. Conduct or facilitate teacher professional workshops that focus on experiential teaching methods and adult programs that focus on the natural and cultural history of the Smoky Mountains. Serve in a leadership capacity for summer interns.
