Overview:

Environmental Educators (formal title: State Extension Program Assistant) teach engaging, hands on lessons focused on life and earth science, coastal ecology, and marine science. This is an active position which requires up to three miles of walking daily, constantly exposed to outdoor elements (physical and biological) present on a Georgia barrier island. The majority of our classes are taught outside, utilizing Jekyll Island as our outdoor classroom. Other duties include captive wildlife care (reptiles, amphibians and fresh and saltwater aquaria), maintenance of teaching resources, assisting with counter sales, helping facilitate dining hall operations through kitchen patrol duty, and upkeep of facilities and grounds.

All staff members will rotate through lead staff responsibilities. Lead staff is a liaison role between Camp Jekyll and visiting schools. Lead staffers assist schools during meals, organize groups prior to classes, and inform schools of necessary changes. Although you will not have to supervise youth overnight, we do ask lead staff members to carry and monitor an on-call phone overnight.

This is an hourly position that pays $10 an hour (most work weeks are 40 hours with occasional evening work required). Any work over 40 hours is compensated with overtime pay. Meals in the dining hall can be purchased for $2.50 a meal. We have a limited health insurance policy that covers minor medical needs up to $3000.

We offer fully furnished on-site housing for $20/week ($80/month). You would have a private bedroom, and a shared bathroom with one other staff member. The staff house also has a shared kitchen and common area, as well as 2 sets of washers and dryers. Staff members can also visit and stay overnight for free at any of the other Georgia 4-H Centers.

Paid staff training consists of 2.5 to 3 weeks of staff preparation prior to the arrival of students. During this time, you will have the chance to experience all of the classes  we offer. Training will also include teaching techniques, classroom management skills, class and curriculum outlines, animal handling and husbandry, and CPR/First Aid certification.

Jekyll Island is a spectacular place to live and work. You will quickly get to know the 7-mile long island, which includes about 25 miles of paved biking trails. Jekyll Island is one of 4 barrier islands in Georgia that has access by car to the mainland.
