Overview:

The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a science and history based non-profit located on Nantucket Island, MA.

The MMA is seeking to hire an Education Coordinator/Aquatics Manager as an extended seasonal position running April 16- October 12, 2018.  He or she will assist the Director of Education with afterschool programs focused on natural sciences, serve as a field supervisor and aquatics manager for Summer Discovery Programs, be the primary teacher for the Naturalist Leadership Program for children ages 13-16 years, and assist in education department tasks as needed.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Co-lead one week of Spring Discovery Camp
  • Lead one afterschool series in the spring and one in the fall
  • Help coordinate and facilitate training for the Discovery Program’s Environmental Education (EE) Instructors
  • Offer bi-weekly training programs (nature hikes, game nights, etc) for EE Instructors
  • Assist the Education Director with evaluating and supporting instructors by observing programs, assisting with waterfront supervision, and other necessary tasks needed to enhance the Discovery Programs
  • Lead swim tests and serve as the primary lifeguard during snorkeling programs
  • Ensure that EE instructors are following rules and regulations in the field
  • Help with Monday morning check-ins each week
  • Motivate staff around the Education Department’s objectives
  • Inventory equipment needed for programs and ensure proper equipment use by instructors
  • Participate in and promote MMA events and programs outside of the education department
  • Identify emerging needs and assist the Director in developing plans to respond as needed
  • Be the primary instructor for the Naturalist Leadership Program
  • Fill in as a Discovery Program instructor as needed
  • Must be at least 23 years old and have 2 years of lifeguarding experience to be considered for the position

Preference given to candidates that:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and at least 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Are at least 25 years old
  • Have been Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certified for at least 2 years (required)
  • Currently have above certifications or is willing to be certified prior to summer programs
  • Genuinely get excited about working with children outdoors
  • Have a passion for the environment and natural sciences and want to share that passion with others
  • Has prior supervisory experience
  • Has experience in youth programming and lesson plan development in a camp or other outdoor educational environment
  • Can multi-task and efficiently perform required duties
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have strong organizational skills and experience with detail-oriented tasks
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to move, stand, and walk frequently, with or without accommodation
  • Have a fun, outgoing personality and is willing to work outside in inclement weather and occasionally at night and on weekends

Compensation:
Dates of Employment:  Position runs April 16 – October 12, 2018 (end date negotiable) with the possibility of extended employment
Salary:  $10,000 plus housing for you and spouse/significant other if needed
