The main assignment of the seasonal environmental educator is to assist in the program development, lesson planning, and facilitation of a new Maryland Coastal Bays Summer Camp. The “mobile” camp will run in 5, one-week increments throughout the summer, and cater to both local and visiting youth. It will be held at three different facilities in the watershed. The educator will also help re-design environmental programs focused on the inclusion of at-risk and minority youth.

At MCBP, the seasonal educator will also learn the inner workings of a National Estuary Program, meet key environmental partners, participate in scientific monitoring, and expand their knowledge about the Maryland coastal bays. This 9-month position will begin on March 5, 2018, and will run through November 30, 2018. A typical 40-hour work week runs from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work.

This position is seasonal with no benefits. Funding for this position is contingent on the continued availability of grant funding. An ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, recent graduate with a degree in environmental science, environmental studies, biology, education, or other related fields. 

Additional responsibilities include:

• Designing, participating in, and leading educational programs in schools, colleges, and the local community and at environmental education sites, such as MCBP restoration sites and Assateague Island
• Participating in the lesson planning to build upon coastal bays watershed curricula
• Working with public schools to engage students in conservation initiatives, such as habitat restoration and service projects, and to promote Green Schools
• Communication with a variety of ages and backgrounds in an informal setting
• Planning and facilitating teacher professional development workshops
• Facilitating environmental stewardship for the benefit of the coastal bays
• Assisting in the interpretive design and development of an outdoor conservation site to enhance learning opportunities at the property
• Working with leaders of local community groups to create environmental education opportunities to groups such as church groups, gardening clubs, libraries, etc.
• Working with other environmental organizations, such as the Maryland State Park at Assateague Island, to create and implement county-wide EE initiatives, teacher workshops, and field trip opportunities
• Assisting MCBP’s science team as needed with restoration projects, monitoring, and sampling

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science or Art
• Preferred coursework in environmental science, biology, education, outdoor recreation, leadership, or another related field.
• Teaching and public speaking experience
• Can work independently and creatively
• Basic computer skills including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
• Ability to work as part of a small, dynamic team
• Reliable transportation
• Ability to work outside in a variety of conditions
• Able to lift 25 pounds
