Our presenters are past and present members of Professor Nicole Ardoin’s Social Ecology Lab in Stanford’s new Doerr School of Sustainability and they will be sharing details about their latest work, including:
- Research on awe
- What awe looks like in the context of a nature experience
- And how we may harness its potential for impacting environmental learning and behavior

Meet the presenters below:
Anna Lee is a lecturer in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER). Her academic curiosities are about how people construct and enact their relationships to nature and the environment. She draws theory and methods from psychology and environmental education to learn about the factors that influence mental models of environmental systems, connection to nature, environmental morality, and engagement in pro-environmental behaviors, with broader interests in what all of that means for both mental and environmental health. Before joining the Social Ecology Lab for her PhD, Anna worked in research on food security at Stanford's Woods Institute for the Environment, where she explored the world of organic agriculture and farming education through apprenticeships and farm work on the Central Coast of California. Anna has a PhD from E-IPER; she did her undergraduate work at Stanford, where she earned a BS and an MS in Earth Systems, and a BS in Anthropological Sciences. She also holds a Certificate in Ecological Horticulture from the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UCSC, and an MS in Agroecology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Alison Bowers is a research associate in the Social Ecology Lab and holds a PhD in Educational Research and Evaluation from Virginia Tech. Her background and experience include working as a field-based environmental educator and as a special education teacher. As a research methodologist, her focus is on research design and process and she is particularly interested in research reviews, systematic reviews, and grounded theory methodology. Her current work in the Social Ecology Lab include projects on design thinking and sustainability, youth climate activist motivations and supports, and environmental collective action in communities. She has been part of research teams who have conducted systematic reviews at Stanford, the University of Florida, and Virginia Tech.
Archana Kannan is a PhD student in Science Education at the Graduate School of Education. Prior to starting her PhD, she was a research associate at SK Partners, where she worked towards building measurement and evaluation capacities in informal STEM education. Archana earned an MA in Education from Stanford after completing an MS in Molecular Biology from the University of Toledo and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Mumbai. Previously she taught field-trip programs at the California Academy of Sciences where she developed a keen interest in conservation and sustainability education. Archana has a deep passion for science, which comes from spending several years doing laboratory research in biology and teaching undergraduate biology. Her current research interests include evaluation in informal education, developing innovative measures of learning, and professional training for informal educators.
