Can urban agriculture in schools not only grow vegetables but also nurture the next generation of environmental citizens? In this webinar, we will discuss a research project that explores how school gardens and indoor agriculture in classrooms are fostering civic participation among youth. Different aspects of civic participation and educational methods will be illustrated through case studies from New York City schools and School Garden- Integral Classroom program from Montenegro.
Speakers
Alex Kudryavtsev is an environmental education researcher in the Civic Ecology Lab at Cornell University. He explores urban environmental education and social outcomes of urban agriculture education. Alex is the first editor of the "Urban Environmental Education Review" book published by Cornell University Press. He also develops online courses for the professional development of environmental educators.
Aleksandar Novović is a politologist and social and environmental activist from Montenegro. Part of his activism is oriented in a field of informal and formal environmental education in schools. Through his work, he established school gardens in Montenegro and co-authored a school garden education program called School Garden – Integral Classroom. He is also co-founder of the first Urban Garden Community in Montenegro called Bašta Ekologika.
