Overview:
The Crissy Field Center is looking for an Youth Programs Manager, Science and Service whose primary responsibilities is to oversee the direction and development of leadership and education programs. During the school year this position focuses on environmental science and service-learning school partnerships that utilize park resources to support students’ growth and learning. During the summer, this position focuses on the LINC High School Program. In this 6-week long service-learning immersion program, participants explore and support a variety of Park programs, from Native Plant nurseries to support for endangered species habitat restoration sites. Programs are delivered in the national park, other public spaces, and in our participants’ home communities.
This position specializes in designing and delivering environmental science and environmental justice curriculum through the lens of youth development. This position works closely with part partners to coordinate service opportunities for school partners and the parks youth programs. Creativity, flexibility, a passion for the environment, and the ability to work with a diversity of groups and individuals are the foundations of this position. The programs implemented by this position will meet the mission of the Crissy Field Center and take advantage of the rich natural and cultural resources in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and participants’ home communities.
This position must be on Tuesday– Saturday, 9am to 5:30pm schedule, weekly after school programing. 4-5 overnights a year.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Manages Service and Science partnerships: Develops and delivers multicultural environmental science curriculum and service opportunities rooted in youth development outcomes. Works with fellow Youth Program Managers to Co-design, coordinate, and implement additional programming and projects.
Collaboration and Outreach: Coordinate with program managers to develop strategy and recruit youth from Bay Area Public Schools that are from often marginalized communities, which include Black, Indigenous and people of color, LGBTQ youth, low-income families or have barriers that traditionally prevent them from taking part in opportunities such as Park Youth Programs Seeks out school and community partners to explore long lasting partnerships that provide opportunity for sharing resources, co-designing programs, and maximizing impact.
Supervision: Supervises, trains and mentors seasonal staff, summer interns, and volunteers at varying times. Responsible for driving youth in 15 passenger vans. Oversees classroom spaces and learning resources at the Youth Campus.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Youth development. Understanding of youth development approaches, ability to deliver youth leadership programs, and experience mentoring young people
- Multicultural Environmental Education. Ability to connect with wide range of youth with different backgrounds such as socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, gender identity
- Equity and Inclusion. Experience working with communities that national parks have struggled to engage previously, such as communities of color, LGBTQ communities, people with disabilities, and low-income communities.
- Science. Experience in scientific research, sustainability, and environmental justice
- Curriculum Development. Ability to develop an interdisciplinary lesson plans and curriculum that incorporates both park and community resources
- Social Justice. Ability to incorporate relevant social justice and youth justice issues into programming.
- Computer Skills. Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Google suites, especially including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and basic web knowledge. Experience with media, audio/visual technology and video editing/production
- Teamwork, flexibility, interpersonal skills, communication skill, dependability, and judgement
Desired Education and Experience:
- Multiple years of direct service, program coordination and design. Educational degree will be considered and valued.
- Background in youth development, ethnic studies, environmental studies, education, child and adolescence development, recreation, or related field preferred.
- Three years of combined experience in, youth development and leadership, delivering programs for Middle or High School aged youth, particularly in underserved communities.
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and delivery for middle and high school youth and is able to implement youth development principles, able to respond to youth needs, skills in crisis intervention, knowledge of local community resources
- Demonstrated experience in Multicultural Environmental Education, understanding of environmental justice issues, knowledge with issues related to the urban environment, current local, regional and global events
- Demonstrated experience working with Middle and High School age youth from underserved, low income, and/or BIPOC communities in the Bay Area including mentoring and helping youth set goals and overcome obstacles • Multilingual: able to speak language(s) other than English that serve bay area communities. CPR and First Aid certification (can assist once hired)
- Valid CA Driver’s License with 2 years of driving experience and ability to operate a 15-passenger vehicle. Employees must have a clean driving record and have or have the ability to attain a Commercial Class C Driver’s License with passenger endorsement.
Physical Requirements and Work Environments: Work is both sedentary and active—including sitting, standing, walking, moderate hiking, squatting, kneeling, weekly local trips by car. Ability to work outside, possibly in inclement weather, and able to navigate uneven terrain. Ability to work in an active and sometimes noisy office environment
Compensation
Potential minimum starting salary is $64,220, depending on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes paid vacation/personal/sick days, health plans (medical/dental/vision), 403(B), Employee Assistance Program, Commuter Program, employee discounts, etc.
