Overview:
Each year, the AMC’s Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) makes the outdoors accessible to over 37,000 youth from urban, lower income communities throughout the Northeast. We accomplish this by providing training and support to hundreds of youth workers and teachers that independently lead their groups of youth into the outdoors. YOP is expanding rapidly and looking for talented individuals to join our team which aims to serve at least 60,000 youth per year by 2020.
The YOP Youth Programming Manager oversees all aspects of YOP’s Boston-based, year-round direct service programming, offering a continuum of activities for over 4000 youth per year that promotes the development of leadership and life skills as well as appreciation for outdoor adventures. We seek an experienced program manager, a skilled outdoor leader, and an energetic mentor that shares a passion for the YOP mission to make the outdoors accessible to all. This full time position reports to the YOP Senior Manager of Operations.
Primary Responsibilities
Oversee the training and development of two full time and three seasonal staff members
Provide the direction for YOP’s Boston-based direct service youth programming, cultivating partnerships, meeting annual grant objectives and overall goals.
Cultivate, establish and maintain youth agency and school partnerships in the Boston area.
Conduct field experiences for summit site partners
Oversee the management of planning, implementation and evaluation of all YOP youth trips, ensuring compliance with YOP policies and procedures, including risk management.
Qualifications and Experience
Experience and interest in working with urban youth, teachers, and youth workers.
Background and interest in Outdoor Leadership or Recreation, Environmental Education or Studies, Youth Development, Education or related field.
Demonstrated experience in program management and staff/team development.
Strong interest in working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences.
Strong outdoor leadership skills and teaching ability in backpacking, hiking, camping, canoeing , cross country skiing and group management.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Wilderness First Aid and CPR (Can be obtained upon hire).
Ability to drive 12-passenger van safely and possession of a clear personal driving history.
Ability to hike and camp in mountain terrain carrying a 40-50 pound pack, in all weather conditions.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and willingness to learn Efforts to Outcomes, our new database.
Ability to work some weekends and evenings.
This full-time, exempt position offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits. Hours include occasional overnights while on trips. The position is based at AMC’s Boston headquarters and regional travel is expected.
