Overview:
The Colorado Mountain Club’s Youth Education Program (YEP) provides active learning through outdoor and adventure education. YEP uses an experiential approach to connect youth with their local surroundings, making learning relevant and fun by utilizing Colorado’s greatest natural resource: the mountains! Summer programming at YEP consists of week-long day and overnight adventures through Colorado for students ages 6-18. Adventures include rock climbing, hiking, paddling, backpacking, and more.
Position Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in natural science, outdoor recreation/education or related field, or equivalent experience
- Experience instructing rock climbing and teaching environmental education and/or adventure education
- Strong communication skills-- able to work independently and in a team environment
- Sense of humor, ability to relate to children and adults of all ages and backgrounds
- Current Wilderness First Responder certification
- Current driver’s license. Must be able to pass drivers test and have no moving violations within the past year
- Submit a criminal background check
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Able to carry loads up to 45 pounds
- Ability to provide personal transportation to and from the American Mountaineering Center in Golden each day
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
- Current AMGA Single Pitch Instructor or higher-level certification
Position Responsibilities:
- Facilitate a safe, positive, cooperative, and fun group environment with youth ages 6-18
- Meet & greet small group of participants each morning and communicate with parents
- Lead instructor on day and overnight programs; responsible for group management, safety and well-being of youth participants
- Understand and follow all YEP risk management and safety procedures
- Create daily instruction plans as needed and lead activities in the following topics: teambuilding, outdoor discovery, natural/environmental science, and survival skills
- Instruct and coach students in climbing concepts including belaying, knot tying, rappelling, back-up systems, equipment use and technique
- Co-lead multi-day wilderness backpacking trips, and/or multi-day camping excursions with teen participants.
- Assist with set up and break down of technical rock climbing systems as needed
- Prepare, clean-up and inventory equipment and materials daily as needed
Dates of Employment: May 31-August 6, 2021 (included 5 day training prior to summer camps)
Compensation & Perks: $110-125 a day depending on experience
