Overview:
The City of Raleigh Parks and Rec is seeking an Assistant Park Manager for Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve (ALW). This position is responsible for coordinating, developing, and delivering educational nature programs, special events, and camps for a wide variety of audiences from preschoolers through adults. This position will also assist with park operations, natural resource management, and facility rentals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates environmental education programming for Wilkerson Nature Preserve and for other City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource sites as needed.
- Designs, markets, schedules, and instructs environmental education programming for groups of all ages.
- Writes curriculum to include the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's essential standards as well as other educational materials for a wide variety of offerings.
- Conducts educational programming on a regular basis and supervises, coordinates, and trains part-time staff and volunteers who are conducting educational activities.
- Plans and implements all aspects of camp and special events at Wilkerson.
- Develops and maintains a variety of interpretive exhibits and displays.
- Handles a diverse array of administrative and business process tasks including but not limited to: reports, revenue collections, contracts, deposits, and payroll. Oversees rental booking process.
- Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders, including other Divisions within the Department and in outside agencies.
- Assists Park Manager with hiring, training, and scheduling of part-time staff and volunteers.
- Assists Park Manager in natural resource management and performing resource management activities in all seasons.
- Assists with overall park operations including opening, closing, and facility rentals. The position will be expected to work 1-2 weekend days a month as well as closing shifts during the week.
- Provides effective customer service by assisting users of the preserve, providing information, enforcing regulations and standards of conduct, observing necessary precautions to ensure safety of all users, rendering first aid in case of minor injury.
- Assists City in clean-up and repair during inclement weather situations.
- Oversees program animal care.
- Works as a team member of the Natural Resources Section of the Resources Division to further the mission of the Department with other duties when assigned.
Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, forestry, urban forestry or field directly related to assignment and two years of directly related experience experience teaching nature-based programs and coordinating camps in an environmental education center such as a park, nature center, museum, zoo, aquarium or similar venue
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
