Overview:
The Volunteer Coordinator Assistant is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the volunteer programs with the Volunteer Coordinator. They are responsible for assisting staff and/or volunteers with issues in relation to the volunteer program in order to support the Greenburgh Nature Center mission. This position reports to the Sustainability Educator and Volunteer Coordinator.
Essential Job Functions:
Volunteer Management
- Check in with staff regularly to assess needs for volunteer assistance
- Assist the Volunteer Coordinator with the training of animal care and docent volunteers
- Cover animal museum interactions with the public when there are no volunteers available
- Supervise volunteers when they are presenting live animals to the public in the museum
- Assist with monthly volunteer orientations
- Participate in volunteer recognition events
- Meet with the Volunteer Coordinator weekly to discuss potential changes in scheduling and programming
- Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and to recommend and implement changes as appropriate
- Become proficient in the software used for volunteer management
- Provide ongoing guidance for volunteers
- Check in with volunteers to track success and identify problems so that relationships are maintained and improvements are made, report these items to the Volunteer Coordinator
- Teach animal programs in the Live Animal Museum as part of our Public Programming
- Train to learn core knowledge of animal husbandry and care of our entire animal collection.
Basic Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, education or related field
- Effective written and verbal communication
- Positive attitude and willingness to follow instructions
- Ability to take initiative in their duties
- Must be able to manage their time effectively
- Comfortable handling all types of animals including reptiles, mammals, invertebrates and birds (training will be provided)
- Comfortable interacting with all ages
Desired Qualifications:
- Basic childhood education experience
- 1 year of related work experience
- Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and information
Physical Requirements
- Frequently required to stand/walk for 3 or more hours
- Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions in all types of weather
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Valid Driver’s License required
Work Days: Full time, salaried position $30,000 with benefits, Wed-Sun; 9 AM - 5 PM with flexibility for special events and programs.
