Overview:

The Volunteer Program Associate will help maintain and grow public stewardship in the Mountains to Sound Greenway. The Greenway Trust Volunteer Program coordinates events year-round focused on tree plantings, invasive plant removal, trail construction and maintenance, and other enhancement projects on public lands from Puget Sound to Central Washington. The Volunteer Program Associate will be integrally involved in volunteer coordination and support, and will lead mid-week and weekend volunteer events for youth groups, schools, corporate teams, and members of the community.

This position is ideal for an outgoing, energetic, organized and detail-oriented individual with experience working with the public and a passion for the outdoors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Event Leadership: Lead field events in the Greenway on weekdays and Saturdays. Includes developing relationships with, and educating volunteers about the Greenway, site history, restoration ecology, trail building and maintenance, and other relevant information.
  • Recruitment/Outreach: Research and attend volunteer recruitment fairs at schools, businesses, community festivals, and other locations. Advertise events through creating and canvassing event flyers in local communities, mailings, internet postings, and other avenues as needed.
  • Program Assistance: Support volunteer recognition program, track volunteer involvement in the Greenway Salesforce database, and monitor the volunteer program email address.
  • Field Base Support: Assist with the Greenway Trust’s field base organization and maintenance including tools and volunteer event supplies.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Represent the Greenway Trust at special events.
  • Communicate with volunteer group leaders about their upcoming events.
  • Assist in managing the Liability waiver tracking system.
  • Assist in tracking program metrics in the Greenway Trust’s Salesforce database.
  • Assist in managing the Greenway Trust’s photo library.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience working with the public in an outdoor setting and verified experience coordinating and supervising volunteers. Proven personal initiative and ability to multitask, prioritize, use good judgement, problem solve, and work effectively both independently and with a group in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and ability to represent the program in a professional manner.
  • Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions doing physically demanding work (must have the ability to hike to semi-remote worksites, carry heavy loads, move rocks, plant material, tools, and equipment).
  • Members must be 18 years old on day of hire.
  • Must be able to provide personal transportation to the Greenway Trust’s field office in Lake Sammamish State Park.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and the ability to drive Greenway Trust vehicles.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecosystems, flora and fauna.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three- to six-month conservation corps or other related outdoor work experience.
  • Experience and familiarity with hand tools and the basic components of trail maintenance and/or habitat restoration.

REPORTS TO | Volunteer Program Coordinator

COMPENSATION

WSC provides a living stipend of $1,450. (before taxes), basic health insurance, and an Education Award of $6,095 (after successful completion of AmeriCorps term). The Greenway Trust provides mileage reimbursement at the current state rate. If applicable, WSC members may seek educational loan forbearance on qualified loans while in the WSC AmeriCorps Program.

LOCATION and SCHEDULE

The Volunteer Associate is based primarily out of the Greenway Trust’s main office in downtown Seattle, with frequent travel to the Greenway Trust’s field base in Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah. In addition, occasional travel (1-2x per quarter) to other locations for outreach events within the Greenway.

October 1, 2019 through August 15, 2020. The position operates on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.

These positions are contingent on successful funding from the Washington Service Corps program.
