Overview:

Position Description: The Brightwater Lead Educator will be responsible for delivery of IslandWood’s school day programs, mentoring and training seasonal urban programs staff, and delivering and coordinating community events at the Brightwater Center. This staff member will also support curriculum development, strategic planning for the site, and teacher professional development workshops. Responsibilities will include limited evenings and occasional weekends.

Reports to:  Urban Programs Coordinator

Responsibilities:

  • Provide high quality, culturally responsive instruction in ecology, ecosystems, stormwater, wastewater, and technology to school age children, adults, and teachers
  • Provide program support beyond instruction; for example, school visits, evening programs, and teacher trainings
  • Coordinate with staff and partner organizations to deliver community education programs
  • Participate in the design and implementation of evaluation procedures for programs
  • Collaborate with all Brightwater team members for smooth working relations
  • Attend relevant IW Education and staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Degree in education, environmental education, or related field
  • At least two years of experience teaching 3rd – 8th grade students in outdoor settings
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse elementary students and adults in a dynamic, respectful, rigorous, creative, culturally-responsive, and enthusiastic way
  • Familiarity with current state and national science education standards as well as other content areas
  • General knowledge of ecology, ecosystems, water systems, and other general science content
  • Excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills
  • Must be able to comply with and maintain a smoke-free and drug-free work environment
  • Must pass child safety screening
