IslandWood’s Urban School Programs include programs for 4th grade students at urban parks and schoolyards, a suite of programs for 3rd – 8th grade students at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville, and post-program extension lessons at participating schools. POSITION OVERVIEW:
Urban Programs Educators teach field studies for students in grades 3-8. Educator work schedules vary and can be adapted to fit a changing schedule. This is a part-time position (6-18 hours/week depending on availability) and programs occur during the school day. Work schedules can be adjustable quarterly.
Additional work opportunities may be available to educators, including community events, curriculum planning, and other IslandWood programming. Days and times for these opportunities vary.
Reports to: Urban Programs Coordinator
Position Location: Staff may be asked to work at some or all of the following locations: the Brightwater Education Center in Woodinville, WA, various parks within the city of Seattle, various schools within King and Snohomish counties.
General Responsibilities:
· Provide high quality, culturally responsive instruction for 3rd – 8th grade students in field study-focused environmental education programs.
· Work closely and teach with fellow instructors in a small team environment.
· Attend selected trainings and staff meetings.
· Attend post-program debrief sessions.
· Set-up and clean-up classrooms before and after programs
Qualifications:
· Have experience delivering outdoor environmental education
· Excellent communication skills
· Demonstrated ability to work with diverse elementary students and adults in a culturally-responsive, respectful, rigorous, creative, and enthusiastic way
· Available at least two days per week during daytime and/or evening hours
· Must be able to comply with and maintain a smoke-free and drug-free work environment
· Must pass child safety screening
Work Details:
Hours will vary based on program enrollment and educator availability. There are no programs over public school breaks and various Tuesdays each month.
Instructor hours for Brightwater programs are generally 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and some Fridays. Seattle programs are 2 to 3 days per week and the hours are generally 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Programs at schools are 1 to 1.5 hours in length and happen during the school day. There may be optional opportunities to work during weeknight and weekend community events as well.
All Urban Programs Educators are paid an hourly rate for training, meeting times, and program delivery with a set number of hours depending on the program.
Salary: $16.00/ hour ($17/hour for candidates who hold a Master’s Degree in education or a related field or have equivalent experience)
