Overview:

Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary is a new sanctuary in Plymouth with a focus on science and environmental learning that is enhanced through innovative technology and partnerships with other organizations. The property is on the site of a former cranberry farm that underwent the largest freshwater restoration in the state of Massachusetts. The Education Coordinator will commit the majority of her/his time to coordinating, preparing, evaluating, marketing, and implementing an array of education programs, with an emphasis on STEM programs that engage with the restoration of the site and ongoing scientific research, for youth, families, and adults.  

Responsibilities

Management/Supervision:

  • Plan, coordinate, and market educational programs on-site and off-site, including vacation weeks.
  • Maintain accurate records of programs and program participants according to Mass Audubon policy and state mandates.
  • Monitor program registration and related income and expense data and work with other staff to take steps to change program registration trends, if needed.
  • Conduct evaluation of programs and other educational related activities.
  • As the sanctuary grows, there is the possibility of supervising up to two (2) non-supervisory full-time staff and/or up to fifteen (15) full-time equivalent part-time staff or volunteers. Supervision includes hiring, providing new employee orientation, assigning work, reviewing and monitoring performance, and providing ongoing training/ mentoring.
  • Monitor program budgets up to $350,000. Maintain records and files of program revenue and expenses. Track expenditures against budget and work with other sanctuary staff to take corrective action, as necessary. Participate in development of sanctuary’s education budget, including revenue forecasts.
  • Assist in the site’s planning process by preparing site-based education plans.

 Education:

  • Develop and implement integrative programs with one or more sessions that incorporate broader educational content areas for youth, families, and adults. 
  • Develop and implement STEM based programs – with an emphasis on the science and restoration that has occurred and is ongoing at the site.
  • Coordinate and market special trainings for professional audiences, including professional development for school teachers, organized groups, and Mass Audubon staff.
  • Coordinate programs and activities for festivals, events, and other educational related activities.
  • Develop and implement formative assessment tools for programs. Analyze results for evaluation and communicate outcomes to supervisor for decision making.
  • Serve as a resource on natural history, environmental policy, and conservation science issues for visitors, members, other staff, and volunteers.
  • Maintain updated curricula, instructional materials, educational supplies, and other educational resources.
  • Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority.

Marketing, Public/Community Relations:

  • Participate in planning, writing, and preparation of program catalogs, site-based informational brochures, and education related publications, including e-communications.
  • Promote membership and orient visitors, members, and community in Mass Audubon’s mission, programs, and stewardship.

 Other:

  • Attend sanctuary staff meetings and actively participate with the Director of Education in statewide education staff meetings, education work groups, and professional development trainings, as required.
  • Assist in activities during vacation weeks,  and special events and support membership development and fundraising, as needed.
  • Work with community partners (including the on-site Living Observatory) to translate scientific research occurring on site into meaningful programs and curriculum for onsite and remote audiences.
  • Work both independently and alongside Mass Audubon’s Director of Education and other Education staff to develop and implement programs at the middle and high school level which meet state science standards.
  • Work with the Sanctuary staff and local partners to integrate 21st century technology into programs for youth, families, and adults.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or earth science, environmental studies, nature interpretation, or education or equivalent, and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental education or Master’s degree in biological or earth science, environmental studies, nature interpretation, or education or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion. Knowledge of local natural history, environmental policies and conservation science issues desirable.
  • Requires 2 years of prior supervisory experience of staff/volunteers.
  • Requires 2 years of prior experience in budget development and management, as well as revenue forecasting and financial recordkeeping.
  • If managing a camp in the future, must be willing to be trained meet requirements for camp directors consistent with State and ACA standards. Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire.
  • Requires successful completion of background checks (CORI, SORI and drivers).
