Overview:
Summary: The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), America's oldest conservation, education and recreation organization, seeks a Teen and College Adventure Programs Manager to lead AMC’s delivery of high quality, multi-element, outdoor wilderness programs for teens and college students. Through Teen Wilderness Adventures and college orientation programming, participants learn valuable wilderness skills and develop essential life skills.
As the program manager you will have responsibility for approximately 35 trips ranging from 5 to 20 days for 400 participants across AMC’s region. This position includes office-based program administration as well as some field time and is based at AMC’s Pinkham Notch Visitor’s Center in Gorham, NH. The successful hiring, training and supervision of 15-20 field and logistics staff is a vital responsibility that ensures a positive and impactful participant experience.
This position functions as part of the North Country Youth Education team and works in collaboration with AMC’s A Mountain Classroom (AMCR) program staff towards the full integration and support of both youth programs. AMCR, the AMC’s environmental education and leadership development program for schools.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Develop and oversee engaging, multi-day wilderness adventure programs for teen and college audiences incorporating trips with a variety of length, difficulty, wilderness elements, and geographic areas.
• Manage program logistics including: staff and contractor scheduling and payment; database management; campsite, meeting space and vehicle reservations; and development of 35-45 unique participant information packets.
• Lead a core team of seasonal logistics and support staff to ensure competent and effective program delivery and on-call emergency response.
• Communicate with participant family/caregivers in a responsive, professional manner.
• Collaborate on a vision and long-term strategy for teen programs that is mission driven and fiscally responsible.
• Function as part of the youth education team and work in collaboration with AMC’s A Mountain Classroom staff to support that program during the school year, through occasional teaching, group management and field staff support.
Qualifications & Experience:
We seek a dynamic leader with experience in youth outdoor education programming. The candidate should also bring:
• Four-year college degree in Outdoor Recreation, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Education, or relevant combinations of education and experience.
• 3-5 years of demonstrated wilderness trip leadership experience. Ecology education experience desirable.
• Demonstrated management experience. Ability to promote staff development and teamwork.
• Interest and experience working with people representing diverse backgrounds.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent group management, facilitation, and behavior management skills.
• Excellent organizational skills with a talent for details.
• Collaborative approach to working with others in a large, diverse organization.
• Knowledge of Northeast and/or mid-Atlantic wilderness areas preferable.
• Ability to perform in a remote setting and travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions, carrying up to 40 pounds of gear.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and/or weekends. Ongoing on-call and fill-in responsibilities can occur with little prior notice and require extended work days.
• Valid Wilderness First Aid certification or the ability to obtain (WFR or WEMT preferred).
• Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain and DOT certification.
• Competency with Microsoft Office suite of programs.
