Overview:
Tiny Green Trees Nature-Based Childcare Center is currently seeking college graduates with a strong commitment to bettering children and the environment to join our team and teach in a supportive and energetic program that goes beyond traditional environmental education. With COVID -19 upon us, many children will be adapting to an at-home virtual learning school day as the new normal. Our goal is to create a safe place for learning to continue and to engage children in as much outdoor exploration and learning as possible. The Environmental Educator will assist with daily operations as well as with program development, recruitment, and training.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plan and teach outdoor environmental science programs for small groups of children age 5-10 years old in a variety of environments.
• Develop and strengthen your skills as an educator by teaching students with a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds, needs, and school cultures.
• Present programs on natural history, natural science, ecology, STEM, and environmental issues to school children K-12
• Flexibility to choose and develop engaging curriculum based upon your own personal interests and educational background.
• Facilitate team building initiatives and low-ropes challenges.
• Communicate with school liaisons and teachers about scheduling and program logistics
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to design and implement innovative new programming for the students.
Other Activities
• Work in collaboration with other educators to organize and maintain classroom spaces
• Prepare and maintain program materials
• Contribute to the Center’s website, social media or newsletter, as needed
• Assist with publicity
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the safety and well-being students
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Education/Training: BS or BA in natural sciences, environmental education, or related field.
Experience:
Teaching experience in a broad range of ages in a formal or non-formal setting.
• Strong commitment to spending long days with children of various age ranges
• Willingness to expand creativity, interest in motivational learning, and community awareness.
• Advocate for the environment and conservation of natural resources.
• Flexibility and the ability to deal with the unexpected and quickly changing nature of outdoor activities and children.
• Pass a background check
Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to develop and teach science programs
• Lifeguard certification or the ability to gain certification is required
• Ability to develop and present virtual programming
• Experience teaching with a broad range of ages
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for the outdoors and outdoor education, even when long days and conditions are challenging.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Job Conditions/Work Location:
• Majority of time spent outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions
• Some office/desk work
Physical Requirements:
• Lifting small children as needed
• Hiking for a full day
Details
• $15-$20 hourly pay. Full time is 33 hours a week.
• Benefits: There are no health benefits at this time, however, we offer 4 day work weeks and paid time off, phone plans, paid continued education, and planning time.
