Overview:

RV volunteers are needed to support the care of a historic Forest Service property on the shore of South Lake Tahoe. Positions are available in maintenance, artistry, interpretation and docent work, from May until October. Volunteers commit 4 days per week to the site and are asked to stay for an 8 week minimum. RV camping is provided at no cost, as well as additional volunteer service rewards. 

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) serves as the interpretative association for the Tallac Historic Site, a Forest Service property located on Lake Tahoe's southwest shore. Registered as a nationl historic place, Tallac Historic Site consists of 20 structures that preserve turn-of-the-centure Tahoe in time for modern-day exploration. 

Seasonal volunteers are the primary stewards of the buildings and land surroudning the historic property. Volunteers work with Forest Service and GBI staff to conduct structural repairs, operate visitor services such as tours and museums, give interpretative programs and information, maintain grounds and trails, as well as support special events. Typical tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Tour guide
  • Museum docent
  • Gift shop operations
  • Carpentry
  • Trail worker
  • Gardner
  • Artifact preservation
  • General maintenance (cleaning, yard work)
  • Visitor information
  • Special events 

RV volunteers work four days/week (Thursday - Sunday) and are free to explore what Lake Tahoe has to offer on their days off. A typical work day is roughly seven hours, and volunteers commit 28-32hours/week of service.
