Overview:

The Walking Mountains Science Center Sustainability Fellowship is a 13-month full-time position that will provide the opportunity to deeply engage in collaborative thinking and skill development with the focus of climate action education, implementation, and outreach. The Fellow will also gain hands-on outreach skills in fostering sustainable behaviors while gaining valuable experience learning how mountain communities, governments, and businesses are taking action and reducing their carbon emissions. The Fellow will interact with local partners driving sustainable change and will have the opportunity to learn about and share widely the projects and initiatives underway to reduce local carbon emissions. This position will regularly report to the Sustainability Programs Manager, but will work with the entire Sustainability Programs team to coordinate the department’s efforts in leading the community-wide achievement of the climate actions goals set in the Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community (CAP) through initiatives and educational opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Sustainability Programs department staff to identify and deliver on education and outreach needs specific to the department strategy for a more coordinated effort to improve efficiency and effectiveness, specifically as they relate to Climate Action Plan goals and priority actions.
  • Help with content development and communication (written, social media, others); event planning and execution; and other education and outreach activities as needed or assigned.
  • Work with local partners to create and facilitate a high school climate action group that includes diverse students from each local high school who live throughout the valley.
  • Support the organization and execution of a “Climate Action Week” during Earth Week in April, to bring together the local residents, partner organizations, students and governments to engage in local solutions to climate change.
  • Identify global, national, and regional events that can be used as education and outreach opportunities locally.
  • Participate in, and support execution of the Climate Action Collaborative’s Education and Outreach plan and Advisory Panel to align WMSC Sustainability education plan with community-wide Climate Action Plan implementation.
  • Support research and development of priority actions outlined in the CAP Update as needed including, Natural Climate Solutions.
  • Provide outreach throughout the community at events representing all Walking Mountains Sustainability Programs and support sustainability programs/staff as needed or assigned.
  • Assist with WMSC organizational special events as needed.
  • Understand and follow the organizational risk management policies and procedures.
  • Act in compliance with the Walking Mountains Science Center Employee Handbook.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability or a related focus field or equivalent experience working in this field.
  • Enthusiasm for working hands-on with environmental sustainability efforts including but not limited to, climate action, energy efficiency, and waste diversion
  • Working knowledge of community-based social marketing
  • Desire to educate others on sustainability initiatives while expanding personal knowledge of current sustainability trends
  • Comfortable interacting publicly with a variety of people in various settings including high school students
  • Positive, compassionate, self-motivated, organized, creative and professional individual who can work independently and as part of a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid time management skills, with attention to detail and timelines
  • Strong social media knowledge and computer skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to multi-task and work with changing priorities as needed
  • Availability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends)
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, and reliable form of transportation
  • Spanish language skills (desired, but not required)
