Overview:
About Living Classrooms: Living Classrooms is responsible for the operation of educational programs in both Baltimore and the D.C. Metropolitan area. LCF is operated for the benefit of the community at large, providing hands-on education and job training, with a special emphasis on at-risk youth and groups from diverse backgrounds. Utilizing maritime settings, the Foundation provides experience-based educational programs emphasizing the applied learning of math, science, language arts, history, economics, and ecology.
Job Responsibilities: The summer shipboard Educator helps to implement the shipboard education programs. High energy, dedication, enthusiasm, flexibility, organization and a hard-work ethic are required. Qualified applicants must possess a strong commitment to the education of all students, be motivated self-starters, function successfully as part of a team, and maintain a desire to work outdoors in a challenging but fun environment. This is a physically demanding job that necessitates a certain amount of physical fitness.
Additional responsibilities:
- Conduct and supervise implementation of Living Classrooms Foundation educational programs on the Lady Maryland.
- Responsible for the safe and successful implementation of Living Classrooms Foundation educational programs.
- Research and gain information and knowledge to prepare for leading programs on-board.
- Assist the crew with ship’s operations.
- Assist crew with 24-hour supervision of students on live aboard programs.
- Review and adjust science stations and curriculum
- Maintain and/or calibrate equipment
- Assist in development of science programs and stations. Teach classes on-board in a “hands- on" way as much as possible.
- Train other staff in running science stations
- Maintain, monitor and care for educational supplies to keep in good condition and in good supply.
- Record or oversee recording of accurate trawl and water quality data which is compiled for each state visited
- Develop, implement, and oversee research projects.
- Help evaluate student performance.
- Sail on up to four, nine daylong Living Classrooms Live-Aboard programs.
- Report to Director of Shipboard Education.
- Maintain professionalism at all times as an important representative of the Living Classrooms Foundation.
- Such other duties as are necessary for the operation of the programs or the Foundation or as assigned by the Director of Shipboard Education Programs.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Preferred background in environmental science, education, or a related field.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- A passion for nature and working with children in an informal setting.
- Previous experience working with youth in and out of the classroom and developing and implementing group management techniques.
- Experience working on or around boats, or a willingness to be trained.
- Will be expected to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) and participate in outdoor activities.
- Must be prepared to work outside in a variety of weather conditions including light to moderate rain, warm and cool weather.
Additional Information:
Position is seasonal, available approx. June 10 – August 16, 2019.
Housing and meals are provided during programs.
