We are looking for FUN, environmental educators  to join our awesome team. 

Our unique nonprofit camp has been offering day, overnight and  Teen Adventure programs for children ages 7-14 since 1922.    We provide subsidized programs and many scholarships for kids that would otherwise not be able to afford such an opportunity. Our campers are wonderful – and so we only hire the best folks to be our summer staff!

JOB DESCRIPTION ENVIRONMENTALIST (Temporary):      

RESPONSIBLE TO: CAMP DIRECTOR

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A college degree (or at least 1 year of completed college course in) in education, biology, environmental science, or related field or equivalent experience.
• A valid driver’s license
• Age 21 years or more

EXPERIENCE:

• At least 1 year experience in camping, education, recreation, or youth-related work.
• At least 1 year experience in working with animals
• Experience with environmental  activities such as pond study, wild edibles, natural history preferred

• Strong desire to work with disadvantaged youth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• The ability to communicate and work with campers and staff, and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
• Ability to observe campers behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate Risk Management Code regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environment and other hazards related to any camp activity the staff member participates in or leads.
• Ability to train staff and campers in safety regulations and emergency procedures.
• Ability to communicate and work with campers and provide necessary instruction to campers
• Ability to work maintain camp live animal collection in a safe and sanitary condition
• Ability to safely handle camp animals for instructional activities
• Physical ability to participate in all facets of camp programs
• Ability to work long hours especially during the operation of the summer camp.

BROAD RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop, schedule and lead morning and afternoon Environmental Education programs for campers. 
• Direction, supervision, and organization of counselors and campers in the Environmental Education portion of the program, in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
• Become completely familiar with those aspects of Risk Management Code that relate directly to this position. 
• Assist Village Leaders lead camp activities when not running Environmental Education.
• Assist Farm Educator when not running the Environmental Education and Animal programs
• Maintain the health and cleanliness of the Camps’ live animal collection

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and lead a daily activity that focus on Environmental Education and utilizes the natural areas of camp such as creeks, pond, meadows and forests.
• Develop and lead activities that utilize the camps’ live animal collection.
• Train and supervise the staff in leading environmental activities.
• Maintain the Environmental Center, exhibits, and garden in a sanitary, organized and tidy state.
• Maintain the camps’ live animal collection and assume responsibility for the daily feeding, watering and cleaning of all live animals at the Environmental Center.
• Maintain Environmental Center displays and lesson equipment
• Participate in the overall camp program, focusing on bringing positive environmental awareness to as many aspects of the camp program as possible.
• Environmentalist should lead afternoon activities for campers each day.  Particular emphasis should be placed on activities which involve visiting the animal, natural areas, Environmental Center and garden.
• Provide for spontaneous and additional Environmental Education activities, i.e. owl lessons during overnights, creek crawl afternoons and other program times as assigned.
• As a supportive staff member, undertake all duties such as supervision during meals, snack and shower time, swim, and whenever needed. 
• At the end of summer, submit an End of Summer Report, Summer Highlights and all relevant evaluation forms.
• Become completely familiar with those aspects of the Risk Management Code that relate to the operation of the Summer Camps at College Settlement.
• Assist with other duties as needed e.g. assuming daily role as counselor when not leading environmental center activities, etc.
• Become familiar with those aspects of the ACA and USDA Standards which relate to your job responsibilities.
