Overview:

The NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island offers week-long, non-residential summer day camps for children ages 5-14, and is seeking skilled and enthusiastic educators to lead the various sessions of summer camps.  Camp themes include sea turtles, fishing, outdoor adventures, and Roanoke Island history, and camp days consist of activities such as kayaking outings, crabbing, fishing, snorkeling, live animal presentations, crafts, behind-the-scenes tours, beach ecology trips, salt marsh field trips, and maritime forest field trips.  The Special Activities Camp Instructors will be responsible for facilitating all camp activities for all ages, transporting campers in a fifteen-passenger van, upholding safety standards, and working well within a team to successfully execute educational camps in support the Aquarium mission.

Applicants should be articulate, enthusiastic, and have a strong work ethic.  Candidates must either have a degree or be in pursuit of a degree in Biology, Marine Sciences, Natural Resources, Environmental Education, Parks and Rec, or a related field.  If in pursuit of such a degree, applicants must have completed at least two years towards degree.  Prior experience working with the public, adaptability to different teaching situations, an ability to work well with others, a flexible schedule, current CPR & First Aid certification, and a valid driver’s license are all required.  The following skills and/or current certifications are preferred:  Lifeguard Certification, Divemaster Certification, kayak experience, teaching experience, water safety skills, experience working with children, and a working knowledge of the Outer Banks flora and fauna.  Candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and be able to spend extended periods of time outdoors.  A background check is required.

DURATION: June through August, 2017, 30 – 40 hours per week

 Some nights, holidays and weekend work required

 

SALARY: $11.32 per hour. *This is an hourly position with a maximum of 40 hours per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.
