The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC and is nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 1600 animals in its collection. Over 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see the largest collection of sharks in North Carolina, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and think about how special North Carolina’s waterways are.
- Weekend, evening and holiday work required. Occasional travel is required for Aquarium meetings.
- Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
- If selected for hire, prior to first day of work a background check will be completed.
- A skills assessment may be conducted during the interviewing process for this position.
Description of Work:
This position provides support for educational programming at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island within the public programs section of the education department. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: delivering interactive lecture style programs (sharks, sea turtles, jellyfish, etc.); handling live animals; facilitating trivia-style games; showing educational videos; introducing guest speakers; providing information to Aquarium visitors, including teachers, students, and the general public; staffing discovery carts and learning stations; answering questions in various galleries; monitoring the Sea Senses touch pools; and assisting with other tasks as assigned. This position requires the ability to assemble educational materials, to research marine and aquatic topics, and to speak to small and large audiences. Additional responsibilities and projects will be assigned by the Education Curator or the full-time Educators.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Applicants should prove through their record of work, education, and/or volunteer experience, and/or demonstrate in their interview that they:
- are an articulate communicator
- have good public speaking skills and will be comfortable speaking in front of large audiences
- have good time management skills and organizational skills
- can receive training and learn to present exceptional educational programs to adults and children of all ages in a variety of teaching situations
- can communicate well with and work well with aquarium staff, interns, and volunteers
- can take direction and incorporate feedback from permanent education staff
- have an interest and ability to read, synthesize and present information on a variety of freshwater biology, marine biology, ecology, and conservation topics
Prior experience in public speaking and a flexible schedule are required. Coursework in marine
biology, freshwater biology, science education, parks and recreation, and/or any other science or education courses is preferred.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
